      Hello,

I’m attempting to source around half a dozen (or so) small spur gears to modify some bobbins on my partners Spinning Wheel.

As far as I can determine (using the outside diameter and tooth count), they need to be 21 teeth, 30DP, with a width of around 1/4″.  Material isn’t too important, either plastic or metal will work fine. As for mounting, I can likely modify them or make a suitable boss.

I’ve been unsuccessful with the usual sources, so any recommendations would be very useful.

While buying them is my prefered choice, I could make them if I had a 30DP, No.5 cutter, 1″ bore, which RDG list, them but they’re out of stock.  As yet, I haven’t looked elsewhere for cutters.  I’m also not too keen on spending around £25 for a cutter that’ll end up as a workshop ornament.

I can make thos for you for such an interesting project. Which material would you like and what bore size?

You can get small MOD spur gears for RCC model cars from ebay, they say 25dp but I’m guessing MOD equivalent. 4 gears 16 17, 18, 19 tooth for £9 in Jan last year. somewhat dearer now , but other sizes for 1/8 cars are available now.

Making gear cutters isn’t difficult if you have a manual mill. Just give it a try.

              Try gearsandsprockets.co.uk

I’ve no personal experience of them but do have the company in my list of engineering stockists, and a quick look suggests they may have something suitable for you.

Thank you Pete, that’s very kind.  I’ve not considered yet how to interface the gears with the original wooden bobbins, so can I put your offer on hold for a while.  Making them would be my prefered option, as it would allow a custom interface.

Just in case you’re wondering, the gear drives a device on the “Flyer” (the two arms around the bobbin) that winds the yarn evenly onto the bobbin, instead of the usual hooks (fixed or sliding) that tend to bunch the yarn up if not managed frequently.

Given they are lightly loaded you could consider 3D printing them or having them printed. 30DP is not a particularly common size but the joy of CAD and printing is that you can make them whatever DP or MOD you want.

Wood coloured filament print the gear and bobbin as a single piece

Thanks for the suggestion Peter, but I’m lacking the printer.  I’ve sent you a PM.
