From this and my other recent thread you might be able to tell that I am just starting to investigate buying carbide insert tools.

For those who own carbide tooling: how do you find out what inserts to buy when the current ones wear out?

Example here. Sandvik coromant tool on ebay. Has PR-16M hR117-2-2525M stamped on the side. Googling that only brings up the ebay item though. Do I extract a certain part of that serial number to find the insert?

Google "Sandvik Coromant", when you get the catalogue in screen, use the search box and you will find all the details

Comes up in 2 publications, 4 chapters, etc if you do what Kwil says

Edit though looking further its only showing results for parts of teh code

Probably better to e-mail them and ask what inserts it needs, hopefully not specific ones only from sanvik

JasonB, you're a better man than me. Doesn't matter what I paste into the search box, nothing comes up. Tried all sorts.

Instead of posting generic company websites and saying "just paste it in", why not paste a link to the actual search results you say you found??

Can't post a link to the results as it does not change from the one above when I get the results.

But this is the screenshot if I copy and past the code Rainbows gave in his first post.

But as I said in my Edit last night if you then follow through those results they are not actually picking up on teh complete code. Maybe KWIL had more luck?

Rainbows: Unless you have a specific need for carbide tooling, I wouldn't bother. Spend your hard-earned on a tangential holder instead (no connection, etc). As you an see from the replies above, there are so many carbide tips for industrial applications that you could go mad trying to decipher what it is you are looking at. By the time you have bought a shank and a few unknown tips you will have spent more than the cost of a tangential, although the initial price of these looks somewhat offputting! And, as has been pointed out many times in these hallowed pages, carbide tips generally need industrial speeds and feeds to work properly.

Just my own thoughts. And, yes, I have a tangential tool holder which I use for 99.9% of my work.

Hi all,

I need to buy carbide tool inserts……no problem buying them in packs of 10…but I have a 6mm boring bar that needs a tip…….but at almost £40 for 10 plus the dreaded vat it's all to much…..1 bit will last my life-time….it's just for 1 job…

any recomend's where to go for just 1 bit, then I'll buy all the tips I need for stock at the same time…… ..

it has to be carbide because of the type of material used on the job…..

Try JB cutting tools. They'll sell you one if they stock it.
