Does anyone else have this problem when wearing the standard model baseball cap. Getting into and out of tight places such as the back seats of a car or perhaps a low greenhouse door etc wearing a cap I have found it it is all too easy to make contact with the top of ones head the results of which can be a nasty bruise or scrape.

It might sound a sacrilegious action to take with such an iconic product but I now have got into the habit of taking a pair of wire cutters to remove the offending top-knot which is conventitonally held in position by quite a substantial metal rivet, some made from aluminium other times from steel leaving it in my opinion a much safer product to wear. Strangely enough, such an operation does not appear to affect the structural integrity of the cap in any adverse way and I feel much happier wearing it in confined spaces.

It's a serious offense in many parts of the world to remove that button, as it is a little known CIA / NSA tracking device and microphone to help them monitor and control the world's population. It's not a lightning conductor as many people in Iowa USA believe.

It is no accident that many people in China refuse to wear baseball caps intended for markets outside China.

But if it is bumping your head , by all means remove it. Buying a pickup truck with higher doors would save you getting out the cutters and risking spontaneous uncommanded hat disassembly.

Probably be wise to line the hat with aluminum foil though, to prevent the "missing button tracking rays" from CIA / NSA satellites reaching your brain.

Interesting libertarian information Jeff. It may explain the observed effect of wearing reducing the IQ of the wearer by 5%. However it does not explain the observation that wearing a baseball cap backwards induces a 10% reduction in IQ.

There must exist, irrefutable evidence to confirm that the fashion of wearing the cap back to front was a deliberate CIA/NSA ploy to ensure that the microchip embedded in the head band was closer to the wearer’s frontal lobes.

Paul – is it only 10% reduction? I'm sure it is even higher if worn backwards but at an angle, the closer to 45 degrees it gets , IQ seems to fall off rapidly. Probably related to antenna symmetry….. worth investigating, I think.

Sam – I'm sure there is such irrefutable evidence, but we will never know, it is probably stored even deeper in America's most secure vaults than the Coke formula and the Kentucky Fried Chicken recipe. Completely bubba-proof. I wish someone would adjust the gain on the chip embedded in the president's hairpiece retainer tape to tune that guy in a bit.

Due to the above information. I have just burned mine in a hot furnace. Buried the ashes in a lead container & will sink it at sea.

Having never worn a baseball cap I have not experienced this problem, in the U.K. they are only really worn by kids and gang members.

I used to be averse to them too, Mike, for similar reasons, but they're very good for keeping the sun off your eyes when you're working outdoors, looking skywards or into the sun, and really need to see what you're looking at. They're also readily available and cheap, unlike more traditional British headwear.

I have to admit to wearing various baseball type caps, they cost next to nothing and the peek keeps the light off my glasses, without the peek reflection on my glasses makes being outdoors uncomfortable on the eyes.

Hi Duncan, I was not aware of the meaning of maga in Nigerian slang. But I would not suggest mentioning this fact to someone with the extra word "Krav" in front of "Maga" on their cap. If you do, you may find your limbs rearranged by the cap wearer and will have to drink coffee up your nose through a straw for about 6 weeks.

FWIW you can get "hard-hat" baseball caps lined with a hard plastic shell. Being follicly challenged I use one if if have to crawl around under the machines/benches in the shop.

It sounds like you have been wearing your baseball cap back-to-front with the peak sticking out forwards and blocking your vision of what is above your head. If you wear the cap right-way-round with the peak sticking out the back, vision will be unimpaired and you will stop bumping your head. (Of course, here in Australia, we wear ours upside down, but that's a different issue.)

My youngest son was a wearer for a while, The hat of choice was the New Era fifty nine fifty which comes with a size sticker on the top of the peak, this has to be carefully removed and repositioned under the peak to protect from the rain

They're called 'bump caps', for when you don't need a fully specced hard hat.

One of our suppliers gave them out after he saw me walk into a propeller as he parked his van…. It seems I don't need a physical IQ reducer!

The trouble with bump caps or full on hard hats is that I bump my head all the time when wearing them but very rarely when bare headed. We seem very aware of where our body is, I regularly clatter my wristwatch but never hit my other wrist which is unadorned.

funnily enough, when I wear my peaked cycling cap, I always think it makes me 5% smarter…….although I always have the feeling most car drivers think the opposite!

I always thought that people with their baseball cap on the wrong way around had their head on backwards.

That was until…………………………….I wore one at the rifle range and tried to sight in a benchrest target rifle. Had to turn it backwards!

At least it's the only place that I can wear a Donald Trump 'Make America Great Again' cap and get a few admiring smiles

It is surprising how many people ask me where did I obtain it and ask to borrow it for a selfie?

Disclaimer – a friend bought it for me and I don't want to upset her so I only wear it to get a few bites. No way do I support the bloke!

Wearing a baseball cap has always been standard issue in my workshop but I would agree that the problem is essentially a lack of upwards vision when wearing the cap in the 'sensible' position. The only time I would select the 'idiot' position would be when using a magnifying glass for close-up work or the like where the peak gets in the way of things

Hi, I think you have all got it wrong, the button is just a red herring and the stereo microphones are actually imbedded in the peak along with micro self levelling cameras and an orientation tracker, so it doesn't matter which way you wear it, they know who you are and where you are going. I think it's connected to the MIB (men in black) brigade.

I have to admit that I wear a peaked hat occasionally – to keep the veil, of one of my bee-suits, well away from my face. Two layers of material on one’s head can help prevent any nasty bee from stinging the top of the head, too.🙂

I also wear a smooth topped hat when working under my too-low garden bird netting – a button on top would not be a good idea. Thatch is getting thin enough without losing any more.

In photography they are an excellent addition to the camera bag as they enable one to keep the worst of the sun off a digital SLR display.

But it is as a collector and occasional user of old film cameras they really come into their own:

Turned back to front to use an eye level SLR in the hot sun, facing forwards to keep a focussing cloth from sagging when using a large format camera and most usefully of all – forwards again – to stop a waist level finder from filling up with water when it is raining.

just turned 71 and wore one for the first time a week ago……very strange…….

when I lived in the UK it was a beanie or a full on waterproof hood…….

sure makes a change to be in the sun virtually everyday…..thank goodness…..

the main reason for old people shrinking is the wet conditions experienced most of the time in the UK……

mind u plants wither in the sun…..hahaha……..no easy way to get old gracefully I guess…………
