Battery longevity

Not sure if this is unusual but it has certainly impressed me. In the mid eighties I bought a Phillips battery razor for the occasional vanity shave as I normally use a wet razor. I don't recall what the battery life was in it's early days but I had occasion to use it the other day and the batteries died mid shave. When I took the old batteries out I was amazed to see that they had a best before date of March 2002. I don't use it that often maybe 4 – 5 times a year but for there to be any life in the batteries after all this time has impressed me, whether the razor was used or not. Whilst not wishing to contravene any advertising rules I stress that I am just a very satisfied user of Duracell batteries.

Frankly, I'm astonished, Phil

I have seen more problems with Duracell batteries than all other brands put together.

The battery has lasted because A: it was made before the total ban on mercury inn akaline cells and B: the battery is actually disconnected when the shaver is off.
Allaline cell made afetr about 2005 had no mercury added and as a result tend to leak due to hydrogen build-up. The mercury stopped the pressure build up IIRC it acted as a catalyst for a re-dsorbsion reaction. Any alkaline battery made between 2005 and about 2016 is likely to leak. Both Duracell and Energiser dropped their leakage warranties agound this time. They seem to have cured the issue though as recent batteries seem to be better and the warranties are oming back.
Modern electrnic kit discharges batteries when "off" because there is not real switch, the elecronics is active, just waiting until you push the on button.

I think I can beat that! I had a rummage around and found my old Kodak 6000 Disc camera in my camera bag, bought at around 1983 when they came out on sale in the UK, and the disc advance motor still works with the same factory installed battery. So very impressive for a vintage battery over thirty years old. No idea what sort of battery it is though. Made in the USA too!

I bought a digital watch 26 years ago to go diving in Turkey when we got married…I swear its still on its original battery and still working – how???

In 1997 while mum was in hospital I installed a power operated door on the garage just to make things a little easier for her. The remote control still has the origional 9V battery.
