      Hi everyone.

I wan’t to mount a Dickson type parting off tool holder upside down so I can run the lathe backwards when parting off. I’m not sure of the make, but I iamgine it’s UK  . . (not Chinese !).

So I need to drill and tap a new hole on the bottom to take the height adjustiong screw.

Any ideas if they’re through hardened and impossible to drill ? !

      thanks.

Has it got  a “W” engraved in the clamping slot?  Why do you want to run backwards?  You will be trying to lift the carriage.

Kwil, I’d be interested to know what the  “W” is for as my original one has these marks but some of the holders I have subsequently bought don’t. I assume the “W” is a try Dickson and not an imported copy.

Correct.   Weston Engineering  Some think it is an upside down M for Myford.

Well my imported holders are hardened (needed altering to get a good fit) so I assume the proper job will be as well. You may want to read the thread about chuck jaws to see how to unharden your holder.

                  Hi Kwil.

I haven’t room on the lathe to put in a rear tool post  – so was going to try mounting it upside down instead and run it in reverse (it has a LOO taper so won’t come loose).

I’m assuming the geometry to aid parting off would be the same –  but will probably try it first before I mangle the holder !

On “upside down” parting off tools.  I recently completed a QCTP set up for my Sieg C3.  Amongst the changes I included a pair of upside down toolholders.
Despite all the prophets of doom they work extremely well.  Where parting off used to generate considerable stress, it’s now a relarively calm procedure.
There are some photos in the Gallery, look for “QCTP”

                    cheers

I remember seeing a QC rear tool post for parting off on Myford’s stand at Sandown.

That’s assuming you have a Myford or it might be adaptable..

What kind of spindle nose do you have? If it is screwed (e.g.,  Myford), then this is a very BAD idea. I hope I don’t need to explain why
                          Regards,

I bought a Dickson type QCTP from Chronos and bored it out from 7/16ths to 1/2″. We (folks on here) figured out in the endit was case hardened
                                Here’s how I did it:
