I'm all for pictures of models in the narrow sense i.e. of miniature copies of real machines but my definition of 'model' is much wider. Engineering models rather than model railways, toy soldiers, and baby traction engines, lovely though they all are.

To me a model is anything that represents the structure and/or behaviour of the real world. Models can be diagrams, words, numbers, formulae, symbols, graphs, 2D plans, and computer programs just as effectively as a physical build. Modelling includes ideas and concepts, verbal descriptions of mechanisms, chemical formula, and music. Einstein's Theory of Relativity is a Model, and so is Ohms Law.

I also accept 'Model Engineering' in the sense of being exemplary, worthy, and so good it has to be imitated. Again this applies widely, for example to Clockmaking and Restoring Vintage Cars, not just to Cathedrals made of matchsticks and Dolls House furniture.

Modelling is a Broad Church – why not enjoy it all?

Hi All

I've got all brave and posted a bit of a build log on my 2 1/2" gauge loco rebuild, with some rather jumbled pictures, hopefully this may encourage others, I like to see all types of construction threads, even ones I probably wouldn't build, we can learn so much from other disciplines.

looking forward to seeing some more pictures.

More than OK! But how much does it weigh compared with full-size? Surely it's a 'Baby' in the tonnage stakes?

Trouble with setting rules about what is or isn't a 'model' is a 3/4 scale Allchin might not qualify. A purist could argue it's big enough to do real work, and is therefore a small full-size engine, not a model.

I disagree with the narrow view. I think it's well within the scope of this forum, ME and MEW. I always have a good drool over Traction Engines at exhibitions however big or small they are. Wonderful beasts!

Is your model Allchin actually 3/4 scale, or is it really 3/4" to the foot ? or 1/16 scale ?
Cherry Hill made a superb 1/16 scale version many years ago.

I know the feeling.

I'm saying the narrow view is one that clamps down on what's considered a model on this forum. A few think Model Engineering is all about scale steam locomotives; I think they're wrong.

I'm interested in engineering models in the broadest sense, not just miniatures. In my book model railways are great, but so is fixing a 20 ton diesel shunter on a heritage railway.

Bring it all on, scale traction engines, model collieries, clocks, chemistry, astronomy, signalling, paintwork, electronics, forging, welding, whatever. If it involves making I'm up for it.

Apologies for misunderstanding your Allchin was 3/4 scale rather than 3/4". A 3/4" Allchin is definitely a model! Such is the range of expertise here I was quite prepared to believe your engine was big enough to fill a garage.

One of the most interesting construction series I have seen for years followed the construction of a bridge model.
Memory falls down on the job yet again but think it was a creek/river bridge, maybe Australian ?

Just to add . I build all types of models .Every type of model aircraft ,boats ,cars , live steam locomotives ,stationary steam even the odd traction engine ! etc . My only reemit (think that’s the right word ) is that they are working models. But I don’t class them all as model engineering.

PS Just off to steam test a boiler so if you don’t hear from me for a while you will have to wait for my injury’s to heal 🤣 TONY

It is also possible to click on Members Gallery towards the bottom of the home page to get every album on the forum to come up, scroll through that and click on any that look like they have models in them, you may hit lucky and fins an album like this
