        Hello,

I have a selection of carbide endmills that I picked up for next to nothing because they have chips on the ends. I had thought that I may be able to lop the ends off with a 1mm abrasive cutoff disc but having tried it, it is not going to work.

I therefore need to find some other way, presumably involving diamonds. I tried an old tile cutting blade but that wasn't any good either.

Has anyone used anything particular or have any recommendations. I don't mind spending money on the right thing but would like some assurance of success before splashing out.

Ideally I would want something 100mm diameter but I could probably accommodate 115mm at a push.

        Many thanks in advance.

        David.

Thanks for that. I hadn't seen those on Arcs website. For that price they have to be worth a punt.

            David.

You could try a diamond grinding cup wheel off ebay:

              http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Grit-180-Diamond-Aluminum-Resin-Bowl-Shape-Grinding-Wheel-150mm-OD-Cutting-/262887397955?epid=1573188159&hash=item3d354f5a43:g:T6cAAOSwCU1YwSo7

I bought one of these and mounted it on my bench grinder, I had to turn two clamping adaptors so it would fit and run true on the grinders shaft. Other diameter wheels are available. It is brilliant for touching up HSS and carbide tools. No signs of wear after 1.5 yrs use.

Unless I have completely misread the first post, David doesn't want to sharpen the end mills, but cut them off.

                  Hi David,

I have used the type of diamond disc that Neil linked to, dry, at about 10000 rpm with a Dremel to gash a 5 mm carbide endmill that I had sharpened the same way Angus does. The disc made short work of the gashing and could easily have sliced right through the 5mm carbide cutter.

                  Andrew.

                    Thanks for the replies.

I've ordered a couple of the 100 mm discs from arc and will report back soon.

                    Many thanks.

                    David.

What are you planning to do with them David?

I use the diamond plated discs in a dremel tool. It only has one layer id diamond on the edge so life isn't great. I use them for cutting off the end mill. I have some 4 1/2 discs about 3/32 thick that are diamond plated. I use them for gashing the end of the cutter. Life of these seems to be ok. I have some masonry cutoff discs for my angle grinder that have been unused for many years. I thought I would try them for gashing and see how they work. I will reportbak on how they work.

I grind a v-shape notch .5mm deep all way round, clamp in vice and use a hammer.

Carbide is brittle like glas or diamond.

Once I have cut the end off I can resharpen them

                              A quick update on this.

The discs arrived this morning and I used one to lop 10 mm of a 20 mm carbide endmill. I'm not sure how long they will last doing this kind of duty but at that price,,,,,

Many thanks for the input especially Neil for the link to Arc.

                              David.
