Can someone point me at the posting on here giving a link for the Free version of the above? I saved mine to an archive drive and cannot remember how I got hold of a license key or how I activated it. As you'll gather from the above I don't use it very often but I need it now to help swmbo !

      Nathan

      Edit to correct spelling mistake.

the ‘free’ (cut down)versions I thought were packaged with certain scanners – not sure available other than this though there may have been some trial version included in the cds of ‘free’ software that some magazines published but Photoshop usually protected its software quite vigorously – many of the versions on free download were actually pirated copies riddled with malware – this used to be a problem in University when students couldn’t afford the real thing

Hi Francis and thanks for the reply. I have the full version of CS2 etc which I downloaded from a legal source by following a link posted here. My problem is remembering where the license key was obtained (legally) , it all used to work until I transferred it to my archive drive and then removed it from my main hard drive !

I may have to buy a newer version.

            Nathan.

              .

              Probably in your email archives.

The latest versions of the CS saga are available on a pay by year or month charge. You may of course be able to buy an older version upon disk second hand.

The links for a free version of CS2 that I am aware of want to install some software on a machine and may not even provide it when that's done. There's no knowing what else may be installed. i doubt if they do it out of the kindness of their heart. Also if you search the adobe site for it you might see what to do if the CS2 activation server is down – probably wait until it's up again.

The best free application is Rawtherapee but it wont do local touch up work like the GIMP can for instance. It also has rather a lot of facilities so takes some time to learn but the wiki manual is pretty good. The GIMP can do a lot but is can also be hard to pick up. There are plenty of tutorials about though, web and youtube.

If some one doesn't mind paying a little Coral Aftershot Pro is pretty good but there isn't much info about on how to use it. There is a manual. That will do local work and although it isn't obvious will also handle layers. There are a couple of video's on youtube showing that. It can be used for a while for free. It's actually a pretty capable package. I tried the 64bit version for a while but at the time the 32bit version had far more plugins available. Not sure how that stands now. It would be interesting to know how these are written. Seems the user community does it.

I don't think photoshop CS is available any more and the replacement is Photoshop CC . This is available by monthly subscription as a package which also contains Lightroom and Bridge. It has been this way for a couple of years. The cost is £ 8 to £ 9 per month ( sorry I'm away from my main computer so don't have the exact amount at hand. )

At first I was a bit dismayed at this new model then I got to thinking. The most important programme for me is Lightroom where I store all my images and make, probably 98% of the image adjustments. I had been in the habit of upgrading as each new version of Lightroom was released . I calculated that the cost of doing that was about the same as the subscription to Photoshop CC. so I went ahead. All is going well and I have the full version of Photoshop (rather than Photoshop Elements that I had used before ) .

I guess you will have to bite the bullet too !

Which is Adobe's (and others) philosophy behind the subscription model:

                      – if you were in the habit of buying each upgrade when it came out, you are essentially unaffected.

                      – if you weren't in that habit …. you are now.

                        Hi Nathan,

If you are running Windows (7 or later) you may want to try Paint.Net, it is a free bitmap editing program. Not as powerful as Photoshop, but it depends on what you want to do.

Adobe now have a steady income and aren't dependent on people upgrading any more. Probably a lot more difficult for hackers to get at it as well.

smile I run Linux so can't run PS or any of their other products. I use an applications called Fotoxx for a lot of photo work. It's pretty capable in a number of areas and also has some decent video tutorials. I also use the GIMP and Rawtherapee. Fotoxx is only available for Linux. There are a lot of open source photo applications about some just intended for specific purposes such as Hugin. While they aren't in a single package like Adobe they are in my opinion just as capable. Just add – in some areas probably more capable.

From Adobe's point of view I guess the subscription model prevents all the programme "copying" that I'm told existed previously.disgust

The full CS2, not just Photoshop, can be downloaded from Adobe's website. You need to register with them but the page includes a working licence key.

However, Adobe state you should be a CS2 licence holder to do this and it's just a facility for people who may have lost the key to an old program

Not that it's particularly relevant [sorry, Nathan] but …

Having paid [a lot] for Creative Suite when it was first launched, and then paid [quite a lot] to upgrade to CS2 … I now find myself trying to work-out how to best un-install it from my MacBook Pro.

I recently updated this Mac to 'el Capitan', which doesn't support 'Power PC' applications, so I have effectively lost the use of CS2 … [I do have it available on my iMac, which runs Snow Leopard, so all is not lost]

                                Adobe's un-install instructions begin with:

"Connect to the Internet from your computer, and …"

"Start any suite product, choose Help > Transfer Activation, and follow the on-screen instructions.

                                .

Anyone who remembers Catch22 will appreciate my problem crying 2

                                .

P.S. … I suspect that the 'Product Activation' may be an imaginary threat on the Macs, but I still need to find a clean way to uninstall the whole Suite from this machine … I would be grateful for advice from anyone who has done this.

Thanks to you all for your input. The problem no longer exists, I uninstalled CS2 and started to use a free version of PSP 6 which has just been upgraded to PSP 9 FOC ! Not quite as good as CS2/Photoshop but easily good enough for my use. Don't ask where I got PSP 6 from because I just cannot remember, I just launched it and got the "enter your product key" page which it populated without me doing anything,it then restarted as PSP 9 full install ! This happened after looking at buying the software and during a Win 10 update in the background. Now I'm wondering what would happen if I look at my bank account during a Win 10 update!

                                      Nathan.

I don't know if you have used PSP much Nathan but it will do a fair amount. Most don't realise that it can use layers for instance. I found selection awkward but finally found that the brush size can be altered with the mouse wheel if i remember correctly and where the pointer is adjusts the each part of the brush.

There are a couple of video's on youtube concerning using it.

Thanks for your interest John . I am finding it more than capable of doing what I ask from it . The job for swmbo was just a batch of notelets personalised for each recipient ( family who made our trip great ) after the second visit to a family she only discovered last year after many years searching through paper relics and eventually a "final attempt" trip. So, only a job of minor importance ! The last contact ( in what was East Germany) was is 1958 and the search was based on a photograph showing a young family member born in 1940 .

Thanks to all for your help/suggestions.

                                          Nathan.
