Does anyone know where to purchase specialist taps ?.

I need a triple metric 12mm x 0.75 , – its for a pen top. The specialist pen turner suppliers in the US but can't find anyone in the UK.

sorry , my fault , should have put it in body, have done so now. Some of the penturners forms have had group buys for a specialist order but not at the mo.

A really nice, genuine chap. But kept me on the 'phone for twenty minutes chatting and sometimes this can be frustrating. I emailed him last week but I don't think he "does" email very well.

I need an 6×48 tap and this is an arse of a thread. I can get them in the US but one tap works out at twenty quid by the time it gets here So I will just take a chance he is busy too tomorrow

Can I be the first to ask, what is a 6×48 tap?

Because I am not good enough at cutting an internal triple start m12 x 0.75 thread in a blind hole ( without wrecking the work piece) in which I have invested some time.

Ah, yes. I was confused with this too the first time I saw it. The 6 refers to wire gauge and of course it is 48 TPI.
Or so it was explained to me.

Depending on what material you are cutting i wonder if you could make your own from silver steel ?

Then use that home made tap to make a die for the male thread ?

                              Just a thought.

I use these type of 3 start taps on eyepiece threads and they are mostly an adjustable type of tap with a screw down the center to allow easy entry into existing threads. They are quite delicate to adjust and are very expensive from our Leica tooling section in Switzerland. I have cut one but as a solid and not adjustable and it worked fine.

As said in the US for threads below 1/4" dia they use a number system similar but not the same as our swg as the numbers go in the opposite direction eg a low number is larger dia eg 10=0.190" , 6= 0.138" , 0= 0.060".

Typically used for UNC, UNF and UNEF and UNS thread forms.

The way to write it to save confusion is 6-48 or #6-48

So Mr. Capnahab wants to cut a internal 12 mm thread and for this needs a #6 tap of 0.138" ? (= 3.43 mm!).

Somehow these numbers don't come out even…

                                        Regards, Frank

No Capnahab wants a tripe start M12x0.75 which can be bought from the US, Graham uses 6-48 which also come from the US and thats the common link.
