So it's taken almost a year, but I'm now taking the calibration cuts on the lathe, and getting some lovely results. Variations are very small, and aligns with what is expected in the ML7 inspection sheet.

Taking some very nice cuts using hand-ground HSS on steel bar.

A couple of photos can seen below and the full story with photos and video of the runout tests over a 6" piece of bar can be see here.

I'll post up a full set of finished photos when I have had a chance to collate them.

Many thanks to all the people who helped with advice on these forums!

Hello Matt,
Nice looking job.Well done.
Can I suggest that you cover those motor vents to keep swarf out. I did it with a simple aluminium sheet with 2 slots, loosened 2 motor mounting bolts at chuck end slid plate under foot of motor tightened bolts. Slots in plate to clear the 2 bolts.

Well done. I like the brilliant blue. Whereas you have completed a total refit, you now know exactly what you have for a lathe. There should be no gremlins popping out to haunt you.. I agree that he motor vents should be shielded in some manner; preferably without restricting air flow too much..

Nice work. I'm still playing catchup, but I don't intend it to take a year (equally, I'm not repainting mine for now).

Since the motor is TEFC construction, I wouldn't worry too much about additional shielding – unlike some older styles of motor there is no easy route for swarf to get inside.

David, I quite agree with you about the motor cooling, the fan just blows the air around the outside of the case, rather than through the motor.

Yep – the fan on the motor just blows air around the outside of the motor through the external heat sink fins. No chance of any swarf getting inside.

I did take off the cowl and check though!
