I dunno what it is, but it WAS a bargain Can anyone shed some light? The 3 bars have taper sections at one end; small end simply continues as a straight rod. The crank is cast Aluminium, and features a hole angled about 60 deg to the arm that connects it to the large shaft. This hole is the only one that fits one of the pieces in the kit; the small angled bar (front, centre), which features a narrow steel blade as the shorter of the two arms. As can be seen, the bend in this is about 100 Deg.The “slot” apparent in the upper rhs part is intentional, and not the result of some mishap. It may be a security feature to prevent an attachment escaping dangerously if spun in the lathe by the longer (turned) section. I could go on, but those who know will already have identified it, and the rest of us probably won’t happen on the answer, so I’ll post as is. Thanks anyone who can save me when the wife asks the inevitable question

W & B stands for Warren and Brown.

They used to make special tools mostly for the automotive industry here in Oz before they were gobled up by I think Repco Australia. I have an old Repco catologue that I will dig out in the next few days and see if I can spot anything.

            Cheers,

            Kerry from Oz

              That’s what I was hoping.

The two shorter straight bars appear to have about half a morse-taper on the end; a size 1MT and size 2 MT. The exposed end is slightly domed, and has a small hole like a mini centre-drill hole. Between the two, I wonder if it allows the headstock and tailstock to be both “plugged” leaving the centre holes in each? That doesn’t explain why the long part that would then be inside the head and tailstocks is necessary.

I have a couple Warren & Brown chucks, but the box this came in is from
Bosse & Eunson, General Woodworkers, Cr Hampstead Rd & Richards Rd, Maidstone

I was ALMOST going to say that that is in KENT, then I checked…it is in Melb’s West Suburbs. That explains why the ply was some tropical crap, not at all what I expected from an English artisan.

                  Hi William

The fine wood you refer to is probably Meranti It won’t be that long before you are begging for any real timber. Don’t blame the tree for the quality of the box. Ask the person who made it. Meranti also known as Pacific maple is logged from old growth as well as plantation forests. Its the old story of the workman blaming his tools. before it became too expensive this timber was widely used in house construction often for Architraves and skirting. Also furniture. It is strong and durable.

                  Cheers
                  John
