Hey guys, first time on this site, I'm over in perth Australia and have recently found a centec 2a milling machine in a barn, it needs a complete rebuild which I've just started doing, I have it all apart down to the last two gear shafts in the main housing, does anybody know how these come out? As in which way they need to be pressed out of the housing? To the front or rear of the machine? I wasn't planning on getting this deep into it but the bearings are cactus and need changing, can the bearings be changed without removing the shafts completely? Any help greatly appreciated! Cheers! Matt.

          Hi Matt

You need to remove the two bungs (which are secured by grub screws hidden in the knee dovetail) using the threaded holes in each bung (bolt must be full depth) and two jacking bolts, one either side of the bung.

Once the bungs and rear retaining plates and seals are removed the shafts can be tapped out from the front toward the rear (there are no steps in the column to locate the bearings.) Sounds simple but everything is very tight.

Clean out the bearing oil galleries in the column as they clag up and also soak the rear Gits seal in oil before it goes back in.

Forgot to add everything has to come out to do the bearings

Also one bung has a cutout, put it back in the same orientation.

Ok, so if I'm reading your reply right, I've already done everything I need to, so I'll try persuading them out with the press, this thing has already spent to much time on the end of a hammer from the looks of it, so I don't want to add to that! at least I know which direction to press from now! I'll let you know how I go, cheers!

Ok top shaft is out, bottom shaft is out, the middle one with the fixed gears is not…. Does the shaft have to be pushed all the way through the gears? It's moved but the bearing is still in the casting and the gear has pushed up against the casting at the back of the machine, so everything has ground to a halt, I'm assuming the shaft has to be pushed through the gear?

It does, there are sliding spacers at each end of the shaft but I think there's a woodruff key to stop the gear turning on the shaft or possibly a grub screw. Mods have been made over the years so could be either.

Is the rear bearing coming out?

Yeah, it's moved a little, but obviously stops, when the gear hits the rear of the main casting, I've only been "tapping" them out with a hammer the first two were fine, but this one I think needs a press, I'll give everything another clean and check for grub screws, see what happens.
