My lathe, (chester crusader), has been running fine for a few years, I had to change both the start and run capacitors a few years ago as they were making some rather odd noises. I was running it yesterday for a few hours and noticed that its starting bit slower than normal.

I've ran the motor with no belts connected and the same thing happens. As the motor takes a long time to stop, I assume the bearings are not the cause.

Is it worth changing the start capacitor, or am I barking up the wrong tree??

        Cheers Jim

Changing the start cap first is the easiest and cheapest way to rule it out.

It may pay to buy a better quality cap from a reputable source for longevity……,

As well as the start cap, I would check the condition of the centrifugal switch inside the motor, I had one a while back that despite being able to hear it operating, the contacts were not in a good state and also a dry solder joint on one connection.

              Thank you,

I've ordered a new start cap.

              We'll see what happensyes

At times like this, I wish I'd not placed the lathe right against the wall…….

                    Got the new capacitor,.

The old one had leaked quite a bit!

Changed it and I'm not convinced its a fast starting as it used to be…

I may have to look in to a variable speed set up next…………….
