Looks like a heavy 10. Note the information about the spindle taper and the spindle nose will be UNC not Whitworth so Boxford backplates don't fit. Hopefully the previous owner sorted out such differences and it is fully equipped.

            Hi Bazyle,

Chap said he thought it was a heavy 10, i had a quick look on Tony's site and the gearbox looked different, the chap who has it has got it dismantled and has another the same, I will see if there are any accessories with it, not sure how available bits of kit for it are could betoo expensive in the long run, there is a chance I could get it for around £300 ish, only seen a photo of it to date so I need to give it a good eyeballing, still its worth a look

            Regards Mick

Plus 1 for Bazyle and the Heavy 10, on the earlier cast iron stand. Even if Boxford accessories will fit, such as steadies, they are still sought after and expensive, so get what you can, especially spindle nose fittings such as chucks, faceplate, drive plate etc.

Thanks chaps, been watching some heavy 10 vids on u tube, seems it is a pretty useful lathe and am finding out the things to look for, as I said haven't seen it in the flesh yet hopefully next week or so, just emailed th fella and he thinks it is 1942 so I am expecting some wear on it , point taken re chucks faceplates etc

It could easily be a 13" going by that one photo.

That large block at the spindle end suggest its a D1 series camlock spindle not screwed. My heavy 10 had a D1 and the spindle end looked very similar. Off hand I can't think of any screwed spindle fittings that look like that. From that angle you would probably see the threaded spigot of the driver plate which is about the only remotely similar candidate. If so more likely to be a 13" than a Heavy 10. Large dial D1 – 4 spindle Heavy 10's almost always had the wider range gearbox, 7 positions on the first lever I think not 5, and came on a cabinet stand.

The 13" never got a cabinet stand. Telling the difference from photos is very hard but Heavy 10's tend to look short from that sort of angle.  Looking at pictures of mine its barely two apron lengths between centres. Checked the parts book and later 13" did get the D1- series camlock spindel

Its later than 1942. Especially if a Heavy 10. In that era a Heavy 10 would have had small dials, a single tumbler gearbox and star wheel feed clutch.

Heavy 10 on legs is about 4 ft 6 long so almost certainly a 13". At £300 good value if its in decent order. Top speed is on the low side for smaller work. Short tailstock barrel travel will inspire verbals when you inadvertently pop the drill chuck out for the umteenth time but its an honest machine. At least the headstock is quiet running.

my Heavy 10 could work to tenths with appropriate care. I see no reason why a good 13" Southbend cant do so too.

                        Clive.

The photograph at the start of the thread is indeed a 13" but is in Illinois so premature to read too much into it unless Mike (not this Mike H) is selling his. Shipping would be "Heavy 100s" wink If it is in bits the current owner may have just googled for the first picture that looked a bit like it. Amazing that a lathe looking that old fashioned was being made in 1979

Either way £300 is a bargain so if you don't want it…….

If I found a lathe like that for that price within 200 miles of home I would buy it a heartbeat.

Oh dear, the seller said it was a picture of his lathe, he has 2 of them and I presumed this was a pic of the other, still going to have a look I have a comprehensive pdf of a restoration on a 1957 13"and at that price as is said worth a go subject to a look

                              Cheers Mick

If he was prepared to 'pass off' a picture with American mains sockets in it you might be wise to take a really good look at the inventory of the 'kit'.

Good advice Bazyle, rest assured I will, I have asked about chucks etc but no reply as yet

£300 lathes don't usually look like that.

Less paint, lots more rust, chunks missing from castings.

pleas money send up front now then deliver when I trawler docks.

I really hope this is a genuine offer to sell, you'll know if you do get an address it's OK.
