I bought this small Adept like lathe at a rummage sale (parts separated ready for paint stripping) – is it a home modified adapt – the headstock is 1/2" BSF with a 0 MT spindle (using the middle part of the 0MT ie slightly bigger centres than my Perris – the tailstock is 7/16 again with a 0 MT – all threads are BA or BSW/BSF

doesnt quite match super adept – all slides have gib strips tho 2 are missing) but the top slide is brazed to cross slide (rather home made brazing?) but slides look well made

Any ideas (other than to put on a mantlepiece or as a boat anchor?)

And still they turn up. This one has no identification except the number 18 stamped onto the RH end of the carriage. The headstock spindle is 1/2" 16 tpi, has a 1.5" swing (2.5 in the gap) has an Emco 2" x 3 jaw chuck (And a home made 4 jaw). The complete lathe is about 12" O/A and stands 5 " high. Threads are BSW and BA sizes. Anyone an idea as to manufacturer. It has been well used and abused as there was plenty of mainly brass swarf trapped about it and the headstock bronze bushes were well worn. Apparently it hadn't seen light of day for probably 25 years.

Don't know about Francis' lathe but Bob's looks like a mk1 Flexispeed.

I guess Francis' lathe has had the headstock bored out for a larger spindle.

Adept castings were crude and cosmetically poor, but not poorly machined.

Frances’s lathe was I determined the Flexispeed Student – an adept level shortlived competitor – unfortunately a previous owner having had the cross slide bolt fail had brazed top slide to cross slide

Well done Rod. Looking at the lathes site I reckon you are spot on. The 1.5" swing that I measured could passably be 1 5/8" if the paint between the ways is not too thick!

                    Like mine (needs some work!)
