Painted a light green colour, there are a number of tables and chairs in front of them.

      Where are these rolls???

On another note does anybody have any pics of Cammell Lairds rolling mill, powered by the River Don engine?

There is a thread somewhere in the early days of the forum about the rolls, I'll see if I can find it unless someone wants to beat me to it.

            Hi A G

I took the photograph of the rolls you are asking about at Chatham Historic Dockyard, it was about 2 years ago.

They are very very large and are located just outside the Cafe, hence the tables and chairs which I included to give a sense of scale.

If you want a better look the photo is in my album, I have noticed that the makers name is indistinct so will check the original photo tomorrow.

The Historic Dockyard is is a great place to visit if you are ever in that area, best to allow lots of hours for the visit because it is easy to lose track of time there!

Oh right! I did visit the dockyards a good few years ago when I was quite young, found it interesting then so will have to go back sometime. I zoomed in on the pic and the maker is Hugh Smith and Co. They still exist making the same sort of machinery.

Still hoping to find some pics of Cammell Lairds armour plate rolling mill if anyone has anything???

English Heritage have a couple on their website, depends what sort of image you are after.

Have you tried an online search yet?

I have looked at the Hugh Smith website now, they certainly make some impressive machinery, nice to see we still export equipment!

Well I never, I had glanced at the picture ages ago and assumed it was a photo of the ore crusher outside teh Black Country Living Museum. I must pay more attention.

If you can get to Sheffield … this is mighty impressive.

When I was in the UK in 1984, I visited Sheffield for 4 days, and visited The Kelham Island museum 3 times, saw the River Don Engine, it was being run at weekends so I missed it going. Ian S C
