In the classic way that things go someone has died and their estate has been filtered through several house clearance types, getting steadily more mixed until half the parts are missing and the other half have been thoroughly mixed up, before coming to me.

Would any kit and casting savants be able to identify the major groups of the bundle. I’ve got together a 1/4 of a Stothert And Pitt engine, mystery 5″ gauge steam loco, some traction engine parts, 2 boilers (which may or may not be for previous) then there is the mystery pile. Particularly curious about the worm gear – screw assembly.

        Well………

The traction engine bits first.  Possibly is a 2” scale Burrell double crank compound showman’s loco “Thetford Town”.  The worm and “screw” thing you cite is the steering scroll for the steering chains and would mount across the front of the firebox.  However the boilers (which look basically the same to me!) left hand one possibly old and used, right hand one in process of build, maybe a replacement for the left hand.  The confusing thing is the chimney assembly looks like a roller headstock which would not be part of the Thetford Town.  The cylinder with the large and small bores (compound) would be for the Thetford Town (if that is what it is) the other cylinder casting is I would say a loco or stationary engine so not related to the bits you have grouped it with.

The loco looks a bit like a Hunslet (Alice Class) possibly the Don Young design.

        Stationary engine, no idea!

        Paul.

I’d say the traction engine is an Aveling & Porter as that had trunk guides. The Burrell wheel cover does not belong with the rest.

Ah! Thank you both. Would never have thought of a steam roller.

I think the roller is to John Hainings 2″ scale Aveling & Porter.  That ties in with the trunk guides, 4 shaft hornplates, oil filled worm box for the steering drum and layered up compound cylinder block.  Obviously a rogue Burrell rear hub cap in there as well just to catch the unwary.   Try Reeves or Blackgates for castings and drawings.  It was written up in ME in mid to late seventies.
