        Hi Bill

Quote: More threads and photos on a what are you making theme I would welcome.

As you are also on the MECH forum then I'm sure you are aware of my own build which has been detailed (many hundreds of photos) there since 2010 and still has some years to go.

I am relatively new to the ME forum and thus haven't given details of my build here. I already post to 3 forums and FB and have my own fully detailed blog which takes up a lot of my time doing the write-ups.

However the ME hasn't been forgotten and my build is now (since 1st Jan) serialised in the ME mag, the articles won't have the full content for obvious reasons but so far the editorial team are doing a great job.

        Regards

        Pete

                  Hi Bill

I didn't think you were referring to me, sorry for the misunderstanding. My build is 'Doncaster' rarely off the first page.

Ps: I have the same avatar there as here…

                  Kind regards

Actually, you may find my blog easier to navigate, it has much more detail including my research and probably of more interest.

This forum's strength is that it doesn't restrict posts to a narrow range of interests.

I couldn't have put it better myself.

I take MEW but not ME. I am not a model maker, and hot fog has never floated my boat, but I learn a huge amount from the assembled wisdom, experience and discussion on this forum. I read modelling posts because there are so many things to learn from them, but have limited enthusiasm for other forums which only deal with model making.

Another strength of this forum is that there is enough activity to keep it always worth coming back to. Keep it up, people.

Not sure anyone would like to see what,s on my bench !

Come to think of it, it,s a long time since I saw the bench, there,s so much junk on it.

Maybe it,s time for a clean up ?blush

"I suppose that is one of the things with this site covering Model Engineer as well as Model Engineer's workshop as it covers a much more diverse subject matter."

Is the "Model Engineer's workshop" another forum as well as another magazine?

                                Regards,

                                James.

No. And that's where the confusion can creep in. This forum is called Model Engineer but covers both magazines. As it works out, much of the forum content relates to the "Engineers Workshop" part rather than the "Model" part. That is why there are many threads on machine tools, both the choice and restoration thereof, and workshop practices in general. There are plenty of prolific model builders on here but also plenty of restorers of old cars, bikes, trains, steam engines, ships and the like along with tinkerers in general.

Thank you. That explains why I could not find it.

I must admit I was quite surprised how few comments I had on my Resurrecting a Stuart 10V. Having said that the comments I did receive were extremely helpful. In turned in to much more of a basket case that I expected but came out very well in the end after major surgery to the cylinder. Well major surgery as far as I was concerned maybe not to others.

I suppose this is where a 'like' button would come in, although the number of views also tells the story. The thread was not diluted by random posts, you just got info from people who had previously made one. No hijacking attempts either. All in all I at least thought it was a successful thread.

ME editor is as quiet as a church mouse.

This forum is dominated by MEW topics.

A forum for ME and one for MEW would make life simpler.

As another member posted, he has taken his loco build to MECH forum – reason given was lack of interest on here.

More threads and photos on a what are you making theme I would welcome.

                                          Bill

The magazines are influenced by feedback because the Editors select and encourage particular types of material as necessary to attract paying customers. The forum is dominated by whatever members are interested in. It's largely a voluntary effort, free to read and no-one gets paid. The publisher provides the platform and links it to the magazines for commercial purposes, but the content is almost all provided by members. As such it reflects what posters are up to, and they have no obligation to do anything at all! No-one is being told what to post!

When someone calls for more models, CAD, steam locos, or whatever, or wants to crush other subjects, they are criticising the members who take the time to post, not the Magazine Editors, or the Publisher.

Rather than flouncing off in a huff when the forum fails to meet expectations, the best tactic is to lead by example. Do your* thing and report on it. It will attract like minded souls. The very best way to generate interest is to post material yourself, and to do so without expecting much feedback. Some threads get thousands of reads and hardly any comment. Demanding others dance to your tune and dismissing their efforts is unlikely to succeed – it smacks of politics, and Model Engineers are mostly doers.

More models? Yes please, most welcome. As are questions and contributions about any technical subject. But I understand busy friends may not have the time needed to make me happy by presenting their thoughts and photographs, and many prefer to keep a low profile. It's allowed, but better to share.

I don't think separate forums would help. Much of the forum's value to me is the cross-over between different engineering experiences. Just ignore topics that aren't of interest.

                                          Dave

Please keep posting! What you said was worth discussing and it attracted a good deal of interest.

Always good when suggestions are received with applause, but it's not been my experience on the forum! If you can bear the pain, read back what's been said in response to some of my posts. You'll find I've been censored and rebuked by moderators, committed multiple schoolboy howlers and got the wrong end of the stick on many occasions. I'd be a nervous wreck if I took offence every time I fluffed – it happens most weeks!

Sometimes I'm the statue, sometimes I'm the pigeon…

You will upset someone, anyway, even on here. Someone will be offended by the size of font that you use, if they are that way inclined.

If you think that they are being idiots, just ignore them, and don't take the bait. (Maybe I should practice what I preach! )

Please keep posting Bill, I don't see anything that you've said as offensive, crikey, someone would have to be pretty thin skinned to be offended by anything that you've said in this thread. IMHO such subject matters should be aired, that's how forums grow and develop.

Colin, guilty as mentioned, I really enjoyed reading about your restoration/detective story, just as I followed DocG's V10 build but did not comment. In this case I would happily have clicked on 'like' but, tending to be a trifle verbose I rarely comment. Kudos to you and a tardy 'well done'
