I have the superheater out of the boiler at the moment because I had a boiler inspection and it is ready to go back on the locomotive. Should I take the opportunity to give the superheater a good soaking in acidic acid or should I just leave it in the state it’s in. Apparently the loco hasn’t had much running in it’s lifetime.

a soak in a warm citric acid bath will do it no harm and is much safer than sulphuric. and even if left for a week will not eat it away.

The only area I’d worry about is that header, if the white stuff is scale and not remnants of a gasket.

No point pickling the outside of the elements.

I agree with Bernard too: use citric acid, not sulphuric which is anyway far harder to obtain nowadays.
