Hi Bazyle,
I had the same ‘where does the water go’ thoughts. Apparently Nylon 66 can hold 8% water but under normal conditions (50% RH at 23C) it holds 2.5-3%. That’s around 27 grams or an ounce of water in a kilo of filament! For printing below 0.5%, ideally below 0.1%, is what is required, apparently. I store my filament in warm dry places OR in a box with a chemical dehumidifier, so my filament probably isn’t as bad as 2.5%.
From the improvements I saw the water clearly does get sucked into the hotter (and therefore) drier air, I assume the case is leaky enough for the air to slowly change while still allowing the heater to keep up the temperature.
What I can say is I get much more reliable results with it than my previous ‘on top of a radiator’ approach.
I’ve also tried leaving desiccant in with the filament (overnight) to ‘refresh it’ – after this they work really well for keeping my jarful of biscuits crunchy.
So I’m sure it works, not sure that my filament was really wet, just wet enough to cause issues.
Neil.
