have got a southbend model c 9" thats a long term project.

got couple of steadies with it and face plates.

want to use them on my clarke cl 430 face plates are easy as made adaptor up.

steadies seem to be right size.

but not sure how to make sure they are in right position when making adaptors.

thinking fitting thin piece of round stock between chuck and tailstock winding fingers in on steady then marking up hole positions.

      if that makes sense?

also looking at making new backing plate for cl430 to use southbend chucks on as it came with 11 from little 3" one up to 8" 3 and 4 jaw chucks.

Sounds like one way of doing the job, I believe you need the round stock to be sized so there is no bending with the weight of the steady, also make sure each finger is extended by the same amount.

11 chucks for the Southbendblush ,mine came with 3 which all appear to have Boxford back plates on and although thread is similar they don`t totally screw all the way up to the register. I think Boxford used a Whitworth thread .

Boxford nose threads are 55 degree Whitworth form, the Southbend thread pitch is the same in terms of tpi, but cut as the 60 degree UNC thread.

They are not therefore interchangeable and both the nose and backplate threads will be damaged if they are screwed together

This difference in the thread form is what made a shedload of direct nose fitting ER32 chucks unusable. Despite being unfit for purpose that didn't stop someone who shall remain nameless selling them to UK customers for many many months.

Fortunately ER32 chucks from the likes of arceuro are easily fitted to a boxford backplate, a bit bulkier but not really a problem.

Is there an easy simple way to alter the thread to the 60 degree UNC , ive been considering using a couple of the dog drive plates i have which screw on perfectly (i got 1/2 dozen of these with the lathe). But the thickness and the cut out for the dog dont make it a perfect way of dealing with it.

I see lots of boxford back plates on ebay listed as fitting southbends also , but if the south bend nose thread is like mine they wont fit.

For a faceplate bolt a 1/2 in aluminium disc to your catchplate. It is easier to tap a few holes in it as requited rater than use nuts & bolts in slots which are never in the right place.
