I made a mistake on a brass part that can be repaired with a fill in of silver solder using Easy- Flow flux, all went well on this yesterday.

Today making another using the same brass I again made the same mistake, but this time the solder would not take it just run off in ball. I cleaned the brass using a wire brush and diamond needle file as yesterday, tried several times but would not take.

I've muck it up now by using a brazing rod which did take but melted the edge of the job.

Any idea why the silver solder worked a treat on one but not the other, as they came off the same 44mm round brass.

      Thanks Bob.

Did you use enough flux? In my own tentative forays into silver soldering I've found I had to paint on quite a coating.

Still scares me, and I'll bolt the joint instead if I can…

You say that you melted the end of the job.

If you overheat the base then the filler will simply run off, the flux has already benn burnt away.

I melted the edge of the job when using a brazing rod, but that did take, not the silver solder.

                Hi Bob.
Email details to me with the grade of silver solder you are using.
If the solder melts but don’t wet the brass you have a flux problem. The flux is not compatible with the solder/heating technique/parent materials.
                Regards
                Keith

Either contamination or a flux failure…..
