Doris Black 5 mech lubricator question.

Hi Guys,

My first comment on your site.  Please forgive any issues or errors.  Building a mechanical lubricator for a “Doris” Black 5. Complete apart from the toothed drive cog wheel and pawl.  Any tips on how to machine this part other than hand file teeth and then maybe case hardening..

I seem to remember that the ratchet from an old cigarette lighter being mentioned as a way round this issue. Good luck.  Noel

To make the ratchet wheel for my lubricator, I held a piece of round steel in a collet in a rotary table and used a dovetail cutter in the mill to cut the teeth. The teeth in the round steel were much wider than what was needed and a slice cut off to suit the width required for the lubricator. (I now have enough spare material to make many more lubricators). The material used was silver steel but I did not harden it. The pawl is made from brass and both have not worn after 8 years use.

I cannot believe the support I have been given in less than an hour of the original post.  I have ordered a few Ratchet cogs from Reeves 2000 but I like the challenge of the dovetail cutter in rotary table on the mill.

your lubricator looks outstanding Paul.  Far more robust than the one called out for the Doris.  Can I ask what locco it is for?

Hi Kevin,

The oiler is based on a Fosters type lubricator and was made for my 6″ Ruston Proctor SD road locomotive  (AKA traction engine and golf cart)

Wow.. a tad bigger than my Doris.

just ordered dovetail cutters from RDG.  Did not know if I needed 45 or 60 degree so ordered both.  Can you remember which you may have used?
