Today, halfway through a camshaft, my lathe motor stopped working.

No noise, no smell, no smoke, no drama. I stopped to take a measurement and it wouldn't restart.

At first I though it might be the thermal protection kicking in but it's the same now it's cool. I've checked the fuse on the plug.

I have very little knowledge of all things electrical.

Before I attempt to dismantle things and look for something wrong, has anyone any experience of these things or advice they could share?

        Many thanks

        Steve

If its the brushes you can shake it about and get a bit of life from the motor before it goes completely dead

Check your plug wiring is live, a sudden death with no fuss like arcing buzzing hesitant spindle movement or smoke is quite weird

You can also sometimes kick start a motor, spin it by hand, then once your fingers are safely clear switch it on

Following the link above to see the explanation for the move to internal brushes that have to be replaced at the factory, could someone please explain how more torque is obtained with internal brushes fitted in the same orientation as external brush holders.

I can see the motor costing less to manufacture with fixed internal brushes but it doesn't help the European user when it comes to checking or replacing brushes.
Seems to me Sherline are making the motor a throw away item with the carriage costs involved.

Agreed especially if you add £30-£50 carriage cost to Europe, and it is only 60W output working at maximum 5mins on 15mins off. There must be a better alternative available if you look hard enough.

Those links didn't answer my question about getting more power with motor enclosed brushes !!!!

My original (Australian) Sherline lathe ((brass bed) wvas powered with a sewing machine motor with a lamp dimmer as the speed control and a rubber 'O' ring belt drive. A bit scary at high rpm when the drive belt went a bi oval but a great lathe for making modekl engine parrts such as spraybars and needlle valves

Seems to me they are comparing the old motor with external brush holders to the new motor with enclosed brush holders.

I have searched without success for evidence to support the claim of more power so the word I find for the description may not be within the site rules.

                              .

But is the use of external or internal brushes the only difference between the two motors that are being compared ?

… or is it just a convenient point of reference [an aide mémoire] ?

Sorry, I don’t know the answer, and I’m not sufficiently interested to pursue it further.

I plugged the motor in this morning and it worked fine!

It must have been the thermal protection though it was still dead 4 hours after it cut out.

Thanks for all your advice and sorry if I have wasted your time.

A friend, (like me, careful ) replaced the brushes in his Flymo (Seemingly not intended to be replaced ) by carefully bending up the end of the brass brush box. Having found and fitted suitable replacement brushes he then bent the bras back down, and resumed mowing the grass.

Possibly the Sherline motor could be restored to life in a similar way, if necessary?
