      Gentlemen,

      I'm still tidying stuff up in the garage and this morning came across a digital caliper which wasn't working so took the old battery out to find it had leaked and corroded the negative contact and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't totally remove the corrosion and because of this the battery wouldn't make proper contact. I thought of placing a folded pad of cooking foil on top of the negative pad, I cut it so that it was no bigger the the contact area and couldn't touch the positive piece and then put the battery on top of it and it worked, I removed the battery and pad and then glued the foil in place and I now have a fully working digital caliper again.

          So not really calipers but a general type of repair. I have a caliper, a micrometer, a couple of cheap LED lamps and a clock currently operating with aluminium foil as contact/padding material. I've likely forgotten older devices needing contact improvement. Some, particularly AAA, rechargeable cells either need plastic coatings trimmed back or some alteration for good cell/battery contact.

            Does anyone happen to know where you can buy replacement mitutoyo parts for a digital caliper? I've got a little plastic piece that holds the thumb wheel that broke off.

              NDIT,

              Verniers are my only digital workshop tool so hence title but will remember it for future indoor use.

                I find these brushes work well for cleaning battery contacts **LINK**

                          Sinclair calculators had dodgy battery contacts but a bit of tinplate some cavil soldering fixed them, finding Mallory batteries was not so easy in 1974. I downloaded a RPN calculator a few weeks ago just for old times sake, I still think RPN has its merits but the trig functions on the original scientific were a bit wayward  compared to four figure tables.

                            Others have summarized it already very well.

                            Check battery contacts as that is about the only bit which you can repair, if electronics/electrics have failed.

                            By myself, I am positively avoiding electronic micrometers, calipers etc.

                            Verniers last for life and grandkids life, if not abused badly, Electronics are IMHO "use few years and throw away items" and sometimes phrase "few years" will read "few months".

                            @Mike Poole,

                            Recently I got scientific calculator with trig functions working good enough. My older version at one occassion have driven me banana, while finding a sine or a tangent of very small angle. Problem was like this: If you mill 5 or 10 thou of side of 2 inch bar, how wide flat area would be?

                            Reading from calculator were taken as a gospel and then delivered results were complete nonsense. I got scared, that my brain have stopped working correctly and I forgotten rather basic trig. calculations, but at the end I have realized that it is calculator what plays jokes on me.

                              Still use an HP 32S calculator. I find these things that use brackets to be a pain. RPN is much quicker once you get used to it.

                              PS the Android app RealCalc is a good substitute.
