Members of P.E.E.M.S club have today been to R.A.F. Linton on Ouse on one of our club visits.

What a revelation to see the personal at work and the skills required.

Watching the air traffic controllers at work and the complexity of keeping track of all the air activity from many airfields.

Seeing servicing of the Tucano training aircraft and the expertise needed to keep them airborne.

We then had a meal in the mess.

The end of the visit was to the Memorial building dedicated to the personal and squadrons that have served at Linton on Ouse.

The stories of the aircrews in wartime were very moving.

We were told most of the present day personal have served in Afghanistan.

I have read over the years in some of the local papers of complaints about the noise the Tucano makes on training flights over some of the villages they over fly.

If it wasn’t for the training how can we have the means to defend our way of life in a World full of conflict?

I thank R.A.F. Linton on Ouse for allowing the club to visit and see the work they are doing.

Windy, The RNZAF got similar complaintshere in Christchurch, the local station Wigram is in the south of the city (now closed), they used to use Harvards(noisy, yes), then they changed to New Zealand built Air Trainers (smaller, less powerfull)the locals thought goody not so much noise, ha ha, prop tip speed about the same as the Harvards, and the planes were slower. I love the noise of aero engines. Sounds as though you had a great day out. Ian S C

We used to get some rude awakenings from low level planes using Drakelow as a landmark. Hercules and Chinnooks so low you could touch them… sadly we don't get the variety now the cooling towers are gone.

When I lived in Talybont (Ceredigion) in the 80s used to get a lot of planes using us as a landmark (alledgedly as a dummy bomb run target!)Hawks and even the odd Phantom from RAF Valley.
