Piston ring

Hello all,

I usually make my cylinders out of brass or aluminium as the cylinders are no more than 1/2 inch bore. The cylinder I am making is the full size Stuart with the 3/4 inch bore made out of cast iron. I use viton rings on brass and aluminium will a viton ring be okay to use on cast iron, or what is the best material to use on cast for rings.

You could do worse than look at the latest youtube by Mr Crispin. Not your average tuber , RR trained toolmaker and highly reccommended.

I've used Viton in a number of CI cylinders with no problem, just give the cylinder a Home with a cheap brake cylinder hone to remove any turning ridges.

Don't use the makers figures for ring compression as they will create too much friction.

 

If it is just a 10V or 10H then you don't really need rings, just add the oil grooves as shown on the drawings, 1000s have been built that way.

Proper cast iron made to the words of Tubal Cain (TDWalshaw). It can't be that difficult as I achieved it, but you might need a a split piston with such a small bore. I made mine 0.45" sq. If you only want it to work on low pressure for display then just make the piston a good fit and turn some oil retention grooves in it
