Hi , looking for a recommendation for a pillar drill from the 60-70s with 2 Morse taper and gearing.

What would you say is the preferable Drilling Machine

Elliott Progress 2 vs Startrite Mercury 10 Speed

        Or another one?

Have you looked at Tony's articles on lathes.co.uk?

Yes I did look at Tony's side and found the Elliott Progress 2 and Startrite Mercury 10 Speed very interesting. The Elliott has even left /right.

Has the QDM 750 left / right?

I have a Meddings MF4 which is also available as a bench top machine, a wide speed range with a 2 speed gearbox and 5 position belt pulleys 10 speeds up to 4000rpm and 2 morse spindle. There is also an MF5 withe 3 morse taper and different speeds. There are other machines in their range which are all very good machines.

Realistically whichever is in the best condition will be the preferred choice.

Generally the smaller Startrite drills were a little more woodworking orientated and tended to have rather higher speeds than desirable for metalworking. Even the ones with the reduction gearbox might be considered a bit on the fast side.

If you see yourself drilling lots of 1/2" holes in metal I'd be looking at the Elliott first.

But speed range is generally not a deal-breaker providing you have 100 rpm or thereabouts for the bigger drills. The ordinary belt drive Mercury is too fast for general purpose metal work tho' and can burn up drills.

                  Clive
