Question about GHT’s retracting topslide drawing

Thanks Ega,

John was one of 3 long term ME friends I lost over the Christmas and New Year. The news of Martin Kyte was a real shock as I had only been exchanging emails a couple of days before.  I did not expect to be so affected by their loss, seeing as I had never met them, but I was wrong.

Fortunately others on the Forum have come along and by helping them it has helped to ease their passing.

Here is my version of a retractable topslide for a Myford lathe. It uses a 9mm wide toothed belt drive and can be retracted from zero for internal or extenal screwcutting.  Its operation is very smooth and backlash free. Twin ball races are used to adjust the belt tension for zero slack.

I recall the Stepperhead being described in MEW (?); did you go into details about the retraction mechanism which is presumably eccentric-based?

I am now committed to GHT’s design but you never know what might come along in the next life!
