Hi fellow listers – I purchased a Myford Super 7a few years ago. Subsequently, I purchased a genuine Dicksons tool post and several tool holders. I'm puzzling as to whether the parting tool holder is original i.e. correctly made or whether it is something I may be doing to cause my problem. Here is my problem. The parting tool holder will take a 1/2" wide cut off tool. However, the cut off tool holder bottoms out on the Dicksons tool post before I can get the cut off tool positioned on center. I've resolved the problem by grinding off 1/16" (approx.)off the top of the cut off tool. But am wondering why I might be having this problem. Thx for any insight. Dave M. Amsterdam, NY

I need to correct what I said above…the tool holder bottoms out on the top slide and prevents the cut off tool from reaching the center point. I suppose another fix would be to place a packing plate under the tool post. But I was hoping to avoid these work arounds. Wondering also, if the parting tool holder sold by RDG might work. Thx for any insights.

Similar problem on a Boxford, but I can't get the tool HIGH enough. To get around the problem, I put the collar of the height adjuster on the tool holder on top of the top collar of the eccentric cam screw – if that makes sense. I also have a bit of top rake ground onto the parting tool, so it gets worse as you re-grind the tip.

I may be missing the absolutely blinkin’ obvious as per, but if the toolholder bottoms out on the topslide how will packing up the toolpost make one iota of difference? Have a think about it. It will be a good lesson learned.

Others have had similar problems, this guy found his quick change tool holder bottoming on the top slide when using 1/2" tools, is this similar to your problem?

Following my post above re' the youtube video, I've just been to check mine, I normally use a rear tool post for parting off but I also have a 1/2" x 3/32" blade in a quick change holder, of the 12 holders I have 11 have flat bottom faces but the 12th which is the parting tool holder is machined as in the youtube video, this with the 1/2" parting tool allows me to adjust it from about 1/4" below centre to 1/16" above.

I bought it new but I'm sorry but I can't remember where from, probably either RDG or Chronos.

Just had a look on the RDG website, they have a Myford parting toll holder with a stepped bottom face, looks the same as mine.

Worthwhile checking with them to make sure it will fit your model before buying.

Yes, had the same problem with my ML7. I also had to grind the top of the parting blade to get it low enough.

I have a genuine Original Myford Dickson Toolpost with a genuine Myford parting tool holder (Original marked "W" )

 

This has a 5mm step on the bottom face.

thx much for the feedback folks. Along with that, I've also watched the youtube video and now know what many of you have known for some time. That there is a design flaw of sorts in the Dicksons toolpost when it comes to 1/2" tooling. I hadn't picked up on it to date as I've been using 3/8" square tooling (your 10 mm) with no problems as has been suggested above. Problem comes in when I use my 1/2" parting tool. It would have been simple matter for Dicksons to increase the width of the block a 1/4" but I guess that was never done and as has already been said 3/8" tooling is plenty of strength for anything you would do on these Myfords. Anyhow, I now understand that I need to mill my part off tool holder. I have a Sherline mill and should be able to do with no problem. thx. Dave M. from Amsterdam, NY.
