      Good afternoon all.

Has anyone got a norton rotary dresser they would part with?

I am struggling to dress a CBN wheel on my 540.

      Best regards: Chris

I have one I bought from eBay which cost me just over £100. 00 earlier this year. The difference it makes to the diamond wheel on my cutter grinder is amazing.

        Sorry not for sale

Thanks David – I saw your post about that.

If anyone is in Sussex and would loan, let me know. Otherwise it’s a waiting game I guess.

          Chris.

Have a look at auction sites as they may come up on factory clearance etc.

I mount my CBN wheel to run true using an old dial gauge. One day I’ll make a dresser for it.

The rotary dresser appears to be just an accurately made and aligned, very free running, spindle carrying the dressing wheel. Which, unless I’m missing something obvious, doesn’t look unreasonably difficult to make something up to home shop use.

Umpteen designs of effectively accurate, smooth running spindles out there.

If I didn’t want start from scratch I’d be looking at one of the import end mill side flute grinding accessories as my starter for 10. The ones I’ve looked at seem decently shake free and pretty free running.

E-Bay USA says £350 (ish) for a brand new knock-off.

I imagine the wheels are “not cheap”.

Free running spindle ! Puts me in the mind of something like the Clarkson air bearing assembly ? It should be easy to make ? Just a thought. Noel.

Wheels are about 28 quid. I checked my spindle taper – pretty much 0. Hub – same and clearance to the wheel bore about 2 thou. Wheel run out with a dti and shim was 0.004-0.005 ish, so I couldn’t clock in any better than 0.004.

Dressing with molybenum took it down to 0.0015, but then I found it would not improve. I have ordered some proper dressing sticks and might give it another go. I don’t want to keep just dressing away for obvious reasons. A used Norton unit will turn up at some point.

The spindle is free running until the centrifugal brake shoes are activated and stop it over speeding.

3 brass shoes and springs – available as a spare part.
