Dave mentioned using a wooden rod as a stethoscope – I recently had to track down which fan was causing the problem of the 7 in my pc, and this thing **LINK** worked better than i would have believed – now I just need to put it somewhere and I remember I have it next time

A bit off topic but might help –I've been trying to sort a noisy kitchen extractor fan, checked bearing ,blades etc. but not much difference. Found the fan blades boss was cracked eventually, this broke off with a bit of wiggling, not obvious at first glance. New fan fitted, still a bit noisy so stuck some bits of scrap hard foam rubber to the case and cover, a big improvement. Seems the box and cover is just a bit too flexible.

The cooling fan in my 280 control panel has started making a noise now, it's a computer type fan that blows/sucks air through the inverter.

As some one else noted it's a right rats nest inside the control box and the fan looks like it needs the inverter to be removed so you can get at the screws holding it in.

Snap! Mine does it when first starting on a cold day, but not always.

As the fan blows air as normal and the noise stops after a bit, I'm waiting for the problem to worsen before I fix it. It looks as if the VFD will have to come out to get at the fan and I'm not sure how it's mounted. Can you share the details if you do yours first?

I don't think the fan is a good example of its type: – the bearings were noisy from new, very reminiscent of the fan that came in a dirt cheap computer PSU I bought.

            Thanks,

            Dave

If there are no signs of fixing screws holding the inverter, chances are it is DIN rail mounted…

              Might sound obvious….but who knows…

Mine is rail mounted along side the mcb…..but then mine was an own conversion to inverter drive..

When replacing the fan use these silicone rubber fittings helps to isolate the fan noise, probably not needed for a lathe but they are easy and quick to fit, no nuts and bolts.

Mines making that squeal they make when the bearings are worn.

The inverter is held in with a couple of screws and with the mess of wires I think I might leave it a bit longer, it's cold in the shed now so:
A, I don't want to spend ages in there and
B, it's warm in the house!

I'm pretty sure my occasional squeals are due to bearings as well. I'm in no hurry to replace the fan while the lathe works OK and the noise intermittent. It's tempting to tidy up the wiring while I'm in the box. But as it's a cosmetic improvement I probably won't bother – if it ain't bust don't fix it.

I would say fix it now, before it actually quietly fails and costs a great deal more than thd cost of a cheap fan. Maybe not so fast as a cpu overheating in a computer, but the same effect – loss of the device which it should be keeping cool.

I know it's winter because the blower fan on my car is squeaking when it runs slow again…
