Looking for ‘the bomb in the workshop’

I recently followed a thread called, as I recall, "The Bomb in the Workshop" about exploding air receivers, and I'm sure it was on this forum.

I've tried all the search methods I can think of on this forum (and on others that I frequent) and can't find any trace of it.

Did it exist, where has it gone, where can I find it? Or have I really lost the thread, and the plot with it?

It was retitled to make it easier to find. But only if you spell compressor with three esses.

Curiously, when I searched for 'bomb' all I got was tallboys and nuclears.

And Andrew, for some reason I didn't think of using three Ss in compresssor.

I surprised that didn't blow up sooner!

Corrected now.

It was more that the original title wouldn't necessarily attract the attention of compressor owners who ought to see it.

Its been some weeks since the "bomb" thread put the wind up me. Today was the first day that I've turned my compresssor on since I read that thread but before it got anywhere near full I left it going, vacated the workshop and legged it back down to the house (Anderson shelter). Five minutes later and with the roof on the workshop still intact I ventured back. I will continue thus for the conceivable.

Its more likely that you will blow the workshop up with the 1/2 gallon of Acetone or all the other explosives we keep "handy" in the same room we do our welding & grinding in etc. I have Parrafin, Acetone, many pints/litres of thinner, paint , spare gas canisters for the blow lamp in my workshop. All at one end away from the welders but still a chance I might dissapear into space on a mushroom cloud one day.

We'll be able to tell which way your ultimate destination lies, by whether the smoke is white or black.

For those worried about this and wanting to try and minimise the risk, whilst not a PROPER test one can conduct ones own annual hydraulic test and at about £80 one can get a small ultrasonic thickness measuring device that will indicate the corrosion loss of thickness. This is not going to be an approved test but will at least give some indication of the state of the air receiver ! Noel

Well my good old compressor, bought in Italy years ago after some travellers (I would say ch***ys but this is not political correct here) emptied my garage and took my lovely 50l tank 2HP compressor – so yes my good old comressor has a safety valve, and as on a steam boiler from time to time you should check if it is still free or stuck. So chances to explode from this side are rather limited. Other than that I have 2 gallons of model aircraft fuel – one with 5% nitromethan (4 stroke plane), one with 15% nitromethan (2 stroke heli) in my shed, which are much more to worry about…
