I am going to extend the leadscrew shaft of my VMC mill so I can fit a Bridgeport style feed motor. I will be drilling and reaming a hole in one end to insert the extension. Can anyone advise what grade of Loctite I should use to firmly attach it. I was going to make the extension a slide fit in the hole rather than a push fit so as not to get half way and it jams and also a small flat on the shaft to let the air out as it goes in.

      Any comments?

      Paul

          Paul,

638 Retainer is the strong one … Wonderful stuff … You could comfortably make the extension oversize, and finish machine it.

Yes, leave space for it to flow … The ideal is to cut a few "splines" on the male part; just like those ready-made woodwork dowels. Degrease both parts thoroughly.

Steel to Steel fits do give you a little time; but beware when working with Brass, etc. … Copper is an accelerant for the curing.

Your advice is correct, of course; but it would be a pretty dull forum if we didn't share our experience.

A push (press)-fit wouldn't help any way …. it would just push the loctite out of the joint. For a press-fit to work, standard practice is to undercut the diameter of one piece (usually the male) at intervals for a thou or so to give the loctite a home. The full diameter bits in between then give the press fit.

Even if you use a sliding fit you may have a problem keeping enough loctite in the joint without undercuts unless the fit is a relatively loose one.

You could alternatively thread both parts – lots of shear-area then for the loctite and enough gap to produce a bond-line the way it's designed for. If concentricity is really important (rather than imagined …. depends on the motor/shaft joint) the extension can be finish turned afterwards.
