I need to remove a pressed on 3.25″ diameter loco driving wheel from its 1/2″ diameter seating on a model engine I have just aquired in order to redo the quartering operation. The drawing shows the pressing-on rig suggested by LBSC on his MAP publication “Hints and Tips” drawing Ref WE.10 but I am left wondering if there is a similiar easily made rig for pressing off a wheel.

I would also welcome suggestions for the recommended choice of bolt diameter as shown on the drawing as I am considering making something up using supermarker studding. Initial thoughts would suggest using something like 16mm or perhaps 20mm diameter.  All useful ideas gratefully received.

If Your near me I have a full set of Sykes picavant gear pulling gear including a bearing separator just made for such jobs PM me OR plan B a chunk of 1/2″ or thicker plate drill a hole big enough to take the axle and slot it to the side. Drill 2 holes just out side the diameter of the wheel  at 90* to the slot on each side. Now take a second chunk of plate and drill to suit 1st plate, these holes to be 16 or 20mm. slide slotted plate behind wheel, fit 2 long enough bolts though the holes and a nut just smaller than the axle in the middle to sit on axle. Do up the bolts, when the first small nut is in the wheel fit second if need be. You get the idea ? adapt this arrangement to refit the wheels. Noel.

Whatever you do, don’t pull on the rim. If you’re in north Cheshire area I have a crude hydraulic contraption you could borrow.

Thanks for the kind offers to help. I am currently exploring a local option but I’m still receptive to fresh ideas.

As Duncan has warned IF of cast iron be very careful not to pull or push on the rim or edge. if the plate you use may flex, slot a washer or two to give clearance. Some one with a small bench press could do this job in minutes, where abouts are you ? Noel.

If you do make the press I’d think anything larger than M10 studding would be overkill!
