I'm machining the various parts for an "Economy" engine and referring to the thread by Nick_G as I go. I was checking for something he had done as the drawing is a bit vague and noticed he had used a laser to set the base for the engine, out of curiosity I had a look on the web for something similar but couldn't find anything.

I lined my castings out and used a scriber to set my base and hopper for machining however they will need to be brought together at some stage. Do others use the laser method?

Picture of Nick_G's set up for reference…

I have looked at the use of lasers, but, for me the width of line is far too much, you are left with guessing the centre of the line.

Have never used a laser to set up work, only to align the head on my round column mill/drill.

The laser is a DIY store cheapy, but an error of the width of the line, over a distance of ten feet amounts to about a thou, which seems acceptable to me.

Cheers chaps, I'd gathered that the width of the projected line from a cheap pointer wouldn't be of much use but the better quality building products have a finer line, maybe I'll have a look at my son in law's fancy one when the lock down is over.

I wondered if anyone recognised the one in the picture…
