Please dont beat me I am a joiner……………disgust

I am looking for some small brass feet for a project I am in the middle of.

I have seen the kind of thing (off the shelf) I am looking for as turn screws or thumb screws but not in brass. In fact If I wanted s/s or aluminium I would have a huge choice.

Basicly I need a 15mm thumb turn without a threaded shaft. Instead I need a threaded hole to take a M5 threaded bar. If I had a lathe I'm sure I could knock a few out myself but the £500 is a bit steep for one job. embarrassed

If any of you can point me in the right direction I'd be eternally grateful. thumbs up

      Iain…………

Hi Iain, I am sure you would find someone here to help if we had some idea of where you live. Most folk don't want all the agro of going to the post office and standing in long queues, but are willing to help if you can pop round and collect.

          Cheers Derek

I'm in north Manchester Derek. I had been trawling the net for fittings for weeks and thankfully I began searching the world of the hobby engineer. I have collected links for just about everything I need from these sites in just a few hours. I even went to a couple of machining workshops locally but their pricing lends itself to mass production.

I feel a little embarrassed to ask an expert to make such a simple thing for me (a bit like asking a cabinet maker for finger wedges) but it seems an off the shelf item just doesn't exist. I did jump on google sketchup and made a sketch of the item so people can see what I am talking about as my terminology is limited.

Iain, you could also ask on UKWorkshop forum, itsmostly woodworking but there are a few on there who take on small mrtal turning jobs for things like jigs, parts for handtools etc.

They may even know of a source for the actual parts

A couple more questions Iain, what dia is the step in the middle, if the 12 mm is overall length what are the lengths of each section, and the BIG question—- how many do you need. If you don't need too many, and if I can find a bit of brass bar the right size you may be in luck. I was born in north Manchester myself, but for my sins, I have lived the best part of the last 61 years of my total 73 in Crewe so the area is a distant memory I am afraid.

                  Cheers Derek.

Thank you Jason, I struggled getting the picture up.

Here is another one but it moves.

I realise this goes against an engineers grain a little but The intermediate sizes are unimportant and only to stop it looking like a simple lump. The steps are whatever is easiest, I originally thought it may look good with rounded edges but I dont know how difficult this would be with tooling etc. I simply drew them as 1mm steps. One thing that would work would be a knurling round the outside like an off the shelf thumb turn. As for the hole in the centre, I can just about manage to tap that myself for the M5 fixing bar. I actually need 12 of these I'm afraid.

                        Hi Mike.

Sorry for not getting back sooner but the terminal screws have just arrived and although a good size, the threaded hole goes right through them. I thought I may be able to get away with it but it just doesnt work well.

                        Back to the drawing board……………….
