HSS lathe tool

I have recently acquired (legally) a quantity of 1/4 x 1/4 and 10mm x 10mm HSS tool bits.

I have a SouthBend that takes 12mm tool bits.

Is there an adaptor that would enable me to use these small tools in my SB or are there any other suggestions. Thanks Roger

I would just use some mild steel strip as packing under the tool bits. My lathe takes 16mm tool bits but I use all sizes of HSS to suit the job in hand with suitable packing.

Just because the toolpost takes 12mm bits doesn't mean you can use ones of that size. Check the top of the toolpost slot against the lathe centre line. If it is higher you would have to grind the tool down anyway.

I just use MS packing to bring the HSS to the nominal size, then use shim as required. Glue the MS packing to the HSS to save time later.

Just the other day i was thinking of making up some U-channel to hold thinner section HSS but support it since it's only the cutting edge that does the work and it'll save some grinding time…?

For 5/16" / 8mm tool-size lathes these sets for mini-lathes include an excellent holder for 1/4" HSS

The tool that takes a big carbide insert is somewhat over the top for small lathes though.

A set of just the two double-ended HSS tools and their holder would be an ideal simple starter set.

The shanks of J&S holders are normally 1 in min. Would be ok on the old SB lantern toolpost though.

I use 1/4" square HSS in a Tangential tool holder.

J&S also do some with the usual end but with most of the shank thinned down – they are a bit rare. I've seen them oil blacked rather than the usual shiny ones.

Indeed they do, John:

The top one has a 1/2" deep shank and takes 3/16" square tools and the lower one has a 5/8" deep shank and takes 1/4" tools. They both have a distinctly "hand crafted" look about them, with a lot of file marks. I assume, from the patterning, that the top one has been case hardened. The lower one looks as if it might be plated. I've had them for ever, never used them but you never know…

Have couple of J&S tool holders like bottom one in Rods picture, they are cranked left & right handed,and take 3/16 tool bits, the shanks are 1/2 inch deep ,like the top one in pic, which looks like it may have been shortened at some point in its life .
