      Hi all,

I'm planning to go to the Harrogate model engineering show next week but haven't been before and wondered what facilities are available.

I'll probably be there all day and didn't want to take food / drinks with me, does anyone know if there are facilities to get a bite to eat ?

Is there a licensed bar if I fancied a pint of the amber stuff ?

      Many thanks

      Peter.

          Hi Peter,
There is a food area but I have not noticed how extensive the range of food they have is. I have only bought tea/coffee and snacks. I think there is a bar. I normally By sandwiches at Sainsbury's which is near the entrance to the show ground before I go into the exhibition and eat them in the car.

I'm looking forward to it, I've never been before and wasn't sure what to expect.

My main reason for going is I'm thinking of buying a small lathe and wanted to see them in the flesh before I buy.

A pint of the amber stuff while I'm there would be nice too.

                    .

It's a fantastic event. I went for the first time last year. smiley

As a newby myself I made the mistake of going determined to buy lots of goodies. – I did.! Only to get home and then think why the hell did you buy that for 50% of the stuff. laugh

It's easy to get into a buying frenzy at events of that type. My advise would be only buy if you are 100% sure. You will own that lathe for a long time. ………………… Enjoy the day. smiley

Peter, yes hot food or sandwiches available, not sure about beer I don't drink but I guess there is some. Lots of parking and easy access .

Buy advance tickets to avoid the queues and get there early, lots to see. Where are you travelling from ? Been gong with our group of pals since it started and always enjoy a great day out.

Hi Peter , First of all , for what its worth , my advice would be to buy an advance ticket if you haven't already done so . For me , the catering fixed facilities provide both good hot and cold food in a service area between the 2 exhibition halls . These are supplemented by an internal mobile snack bar at the far end of the display hall , together with separate ice cream and drink bars around the service area. The greatest problem I have found is not with getting served , but rather with getting selfish people to either vacate their seats when they have finished eating , or to remove their bags from vacant seats to stop others sharing their table. Hence , I always take my own lightweight seating facilities and because the parking can be very/ relatively close to the exhibition , its no problem for me to store in the car until needed. Hope this helps.

Hi, I'm intending to travel by rail from Skipton, it's only about an hour on the train.

If I buy advance tickets online do they get sent to my home address ? I was a bit worried in case there was a delay mailing them.

I plan on going for the first time this year, have to go by car so what's the parking like?

We do not have a specific day in mind, do any of the day's tend to be busier than others?

Got advance tickets and hope the wife does not find it too boring, we are fitting in the show during a week in Yorkshire (too far away for a day trip).

                                Hi V8Eng,
There is plenty of parking. Your wife might find it boring so she might enjoy shopping in Harrogate better. Assuming she drives she could drop you off and collect you.

                                Peter,
The show ground is quite a way from Harrogate railway station. I have just noticed that they are running a free shuttle bus from the town centre. Have a look at this web page. It might also be worth researching what public transport is available before you go.

                                Les.

Which is what we did last year. IMHO this was the best show I've been to and we did all the major ones last year – Bristol, Midlands, Ally Pally, Sandown. Plenty of parking and the catering is extensive: proper full meals as well as snacks and good coffee. The agricultural showground venue seems to suite a model engineering exhibition very well – perhaps a thought for the future of MEX?

                                  Enjoy,

                                  Rod

As for travel I did look at rail services and Google maps and it appears if I get off at Hornbeam Park then it's only about a 20 minute walk.

Yes – there is usually a bar in the main food area between the 2 halls.

                                              Hi,

As yet I'm not sure what day I'll be going, I'd like to go on Friday really but I'm a sad old git who likes to stay up all night after a general election to listen as the results come in so Saturday or even Sunday might be a better bet.

I could use the free shuttle but having looked on a map I think it's walkable provided the weather is ok – might be a bit of a struggle carrying a 200lb lathe on my back for the return journey tho

Excellent show. I went a couple of years ago. I also followed the advice of dropping the Wife in town, she attested that Harrogate has some very good shopping, Also got some brownie points with a weekend away. Living down south it was along haul for a day. Carrying a relatively small D1-3 4 jaw from the show to the car was bad enough…

I went by train last year and was expecting a shuttle bus at the station. I looked hard but there were no signs and no shuttle bus. I met others who were also looking for the shuttle service. I eventually took a local bus which dropped me "near" the showground BUT be warned – it is a long walk from where the bus drops you to the show.

I must add there was a shuttle bus for the return journey but I think the organisers need to ensure there is good signage at the station to let people know if and when there is going to be a next bus to the show.

The show was good but the experience did rather sour the day. I will probably give it a miss this year which is a shame – looks like it will have to be Ally Pally again and every year it seems there are fewer exhibitors…………….
