Hi all' I am thinking of putting a DRO on both my deckel FP1 milling machine & also on my MK Practical 1550, I will leave the myford as it is for now, the question is do I go with glass or magnetic scales? I will be pumping cutting fluid on both mill & lathe,Goodwin technology set up looks nice, glass scales, also machine-dro.uk also look nice, with magnetic scales. I am buying two together so I should get a reasonable discount. Advice on what make you like & why? also type of scale glass or magnetic. I will look at any make you inform me of be it uk or across the pond. This is for hobby use & my workshop is steel, I do have it heated with a wood burner & diesel space heater but only when I'm in working, so damp could be an issue!

if you can think of any thing I've mist Al204 add it to the post.

You didn't mention the mainstream (amateur-wise) capacitive scales – did you rule those out?

I started with capacitive scales and they worked quite well for me but glass scales became relatively inexpensive (direct from China) so I switched to those. Less fussy with jitter etc. I've seen magnetic scales mentioned but I worry about anything magnetic in the shop and never really considered them. Admittedly that's more in ignorance though.

I have some of machine dro's magnetic scales on my lathe and they work extremely well. A lot more compact than most glass scales and reasonably priced. The only magnetic part is the flexible rubberised strip which is covered by the aluminium support profile and (in the case of the one piece profiles which I used, ) a thin strip of stainless steel.

I have not had any issues with metal particles being attracted to the reader strip, the magnetic field is relatively weak.

            CB.
