i recently purchased a lathe and included with the attachments were a number of collets. I am sure someone more knowledgeable than I can identify them from the image below. Thank you in anticipation. Robert Butlersmall lathe accessories.jpg

This size of collet is normally described by the diameter of the shank. 6mm and 8mm being the most common.

The numbers on the end are the diameter it holds in tenths of a mm.

And I am sure you know that the piece on the far left of the photo is the tool rest for the graving tools.

                .

Unless the collets are marked for a particular make; I'm afraid you will need to identify the thread [pitch and form] before there's much hope.

Robert, are there no markings on the lathe itself?

The toolrest looks Pultra style and some of of the collets look decidedly like my Pultra tailstock ones, which have an exact 8mm shank, but the thread might be 7mm x 0.6mm or 17/64in x 38tpi. Some Pultra watchmakers lathes also had this size in the headstock.. My collets are stamped "Conflex" and the size in mm on the end face.

Dear Brian & Thomas, apologies for the delay – dinner and measuring the shanks interrupted. The lathe referred to is a Super 7, the attachments were included with a number of non related items. I measured the shanks and they are indeed 8 mm, the sizes are 1.5, 1.6?, 2.4, 3.0, 3.2, 3.4? and one unmarked. There are 2 chucks and the tool rest there are no marks. http://WWW.lathes seem to confirm the items do indeed relate to a Pultra lathe. Thank you for your help Robert.

The spec is standardised so they can fit loads of watchmakers lathes not just Pultra, and some slightly larger like the George Adams 2 1/2" that was sometimes factory fitted with an adaptor. Some Potts spindles take them so it is likely that some Arrands do to.

They wouldn't be used in the Myford spindle itself so it is quite likely the previous Myford user had such a spindle.

90% of them I've seen are metric but there are imperial fraction sizes too.

I hesitated to scan this list from my copy of the book, but lathes.co.uk has saved me the trouble:

Please look at the tables at the bottom of this page:
