Depending on what you have and what you use a simple spark eroder can cost little to build. It can be a very easy thing to make and will work quite fast. Many of the components of mine came from an old “one arm bandidt” including the 2 large transformers that made it quite powerful. 3/8″ holes in 3mm stainless took 6 mins with a brass electrode and paraffin dielectric. Alan.

It might theoretically be possible but if the cutter drifts off-centre, as it may well do, it could cause even more damage. Or jam, snap and give the owner even more headache. At the moment the cylinder is not damaged. It just has a piece of broken tap jammed in it!

        Andy –

Thankyou! I might take up your suggestion.

Ref #846569 the OP gave his address as Fleet, Hampshire, I sent him a PM #846571 offering to have a go at sparking it out as I have a small spark eroder, also gave him my mobile number. Fleet is about 15 miles away from where I live. I got a reply saying thanks for the offer and I will think about it. I have heard nothing since and I feel that after 10 days of silence my services are not required therefore the offer to spark his tap out is withdrawn. It would be nice to know if Alum did the job for him or to give us the name of the company who sparked it out as others here may have need of these services.

I am facing a similar problem but in my case it is with a sheared off 2.5mm stainless steel stud in a gunmetal cylinder. What are my chances of getting the potassium aluminium sulphate method to work in this case?

Depends if the ss is non or magnetic I would think and a hole down the centre would help.

I doubt it will work – to much chromium ! But the spark eroder will work fine. Electrode to thread core diameter and then pick out the thread as a spring. Noel.
