I have many years ago used the above device as a tacho for measuring RPM. Now when I try to do this, I just cant find the setting. The instructions are not helping me at all!

Is anyone familiar with this machine and remembers how to get it to display RMP or even RPS ?

Assuming you want to measure a reasonably slow speed, presumably the “beats per minute” mode as used for watch timing should do it?

You could email Bryan Mumford at [email protected] perhaps?

Thanks John, I’m checking a 3 phase motor.  The plated speed is around 3000RPM.

I can’t find beats per min, only beats per hour. However if I do the latter and divide by 60 I get something less than half the expected value, around 1490/min. If I put it on ‘count’ and let it run for a minute I get around 1650/min.

I tried secs/beat too. This seems to give me something around 21000BPM. So I’m quite confused!

          Yes I might contact Brian.

You may be outside its measuring range?  Apparently some expensive watches beat at 28,800 per hour which is 8 Hz.  A device intended for watch and clock measurements may well be limited  in its max rate.  I suspect that it’s missing every other beat –
1490×2= 2980 which would be about right for a 2 pole motor on 50 Hz.  Induction motors always run a bit below synchronous speed.

Got a reply from Brian.  So for the record, and for when I forget again, you switch on with BEGIN pressed, then repeatedly press MODE until you get to the TACHO option. Easy!
