I'm a total newbie to metal work, although I use a wood lathe for model shipbuilding. I've now decided to buy a small lathe that would work brass and aluminium at small scales, and have been looking at the Peatol/Taig.

I prefer to work in metric, but the collets offered with the Taig are ER16 imperial sizes. They offer an ER16 collet adapter, but I'd like to check out with you folk whether such an adapter would also take ER16 metric collets. This is simply because of my ignorance as to whether all ER16 collets have the same specification for mounting, or vary according to manufacturer or system.

Thanks for any advice — and, by the way, any comments on what people think about the Peatol compared to, say, a chinese 7×12, a Proxxon or a Sherline.

              Tony,

ER 16 collets are available in both metric and imperial bore sixes. The outside dimensions are identical so the adaptor you refer to will accept both.

The ER stands for " extended range" meaning that each collet will cope with a range of approx. 1mm (or 0.5mm for smaller sizes). The number quoted for each size is the largest it can accommodate. So a 1/4 collet will happily accept and work with a 6mm cutter and similarly with some other sizes. So if you look at the range carefully you will find that most common metric whole number sizes will be accommodated within the imperial range. I hope this makes sense. I recommend that you look at the Arc website as they offer a full range of ER collets and provide a lot of dimensional inf. I have no connection with Arc other than being a regular and satisfied customer.

Tony – I have ER25 in metric, but did purchase three inch ones, for certain reasons. They are interchangable. I would be VERY surprised if the Taig ER16 collets are not standard outside dimensions.

The Taig/Peatol lathes are very sturdy for their size. A fellow called John Bentley (**LINK**

has some good things on his site comparing this lathe to an Asian lathe – or at least he did – it is a good site to read in any case. (link is good, but did not go digging too much)

Thanks, John. Glad to hear positive things about the Taig, and I much enjoy the link.

Thanks, Eric, for the details about collets. Really helpful and informative.

It references E16 rather than ER16, but there is a useful dimensioned drawing at p3.

… I'm sure someone will quickly correct me if the dimensions vary.

I did buy some Peatol collets and one of their headstock a a while back, and I'm not sure they are ER16 (but I can quickly check). But what I bought doesn't have the collet ejecting feature that normal er16 has, using a special closer nut. You might want to check that. As noted above, if you have metric collets it's useful to have some inch sizes, for example though a 7mm collet can be screwed down to 1/4 inch it's a long way and you may lose some concentricity.

That's helpful, John. I was thinking of buying the ArcEuroTrade set of ER16 metric collets, I take the advice about the imperial size.

Here is one of my Peatol collets on the left with an ER16 on the right.

Obviously not the same! However they may have changed their spindle design as ER16 is standard and probably cheaper to produce than their own. The ER16 collet is not expensive but the build quality is streets ahead of the Peatol – just look at where the slots in the Peatol are different widths. But I see that Taig now have an ER16 spindle option, which is an obvious upgrade, as well as an adapter that screws on the normal spindle nose and takes ER16 collets.

Quite a difference, John! I think the adapter you talk of is the one I am thinking of getting with the Peatol lathe. It was this that prompted my question about whether I could use metric collets instead of the imperial ones offered by Taig/Peatol.

I have an ER 2 – 16 mm collet set & have bought imperial collets to suit 1/8" – 3/8" & they fit no problem.
