Hi Ian.
It depends on what one means by “Worth the Money”! After determining my local (Australian) price, I imported a Model 750X from a US discount tool store. I am slightly disappointed by it, as it seems not to approach the claims for precision made in its advertising. As Paul says above, it needs an amount of fiddling to produce acceptable results. There were some helpful tips in “MEW” Number 128.
I test my drills by drilling into a piece of 3/8″ black steel plate after sharpening, then reversing the drill to see how tightly the parallel shank fits the drilled hole. If it’s a close fit, I deem the drill to be acceptable. I only achieve reliable results with the standard 118 degree point and other settings seem very “hit or miss”.
It should be kept in mind that the machine uses a very small diameter, diamond-coated wheel, so small adjustments can produce large changes.
I find it better for diameters between about 3/16″ and 1/2″ and the results for 1/8″ drills are only fair. It is almost useless for 3/32″ drills. The collet drill-holding device is clever but a compromise. The machine’s point splitting function is almost useless.
Mine is used on my DIY drills and my “rough” ME drills but I do not expect it to produce a point which presents competition to a new, quality drill.
Cheers!
Ian
