Hi everyone.

The public land and football fields opposite my house are plagued by off road motorbikes.

The council have installed one A frame type barrier to try and stop them but it's a joke and so poorly designed they can ride through it without stopping.

The paths they are riding on are not bridle ways or green lanes but footpaths pure and simple.

I'm wondering if there is a better solution, or a better engineered way of preventing access to motorbikes while allowing pedestrians to get through.

I've seen the spiked traps on BBC news in Derbyshire and I wonder if this is aimed more at motorcycles than push bikes. Whatever it's a pretty stupid and indiscriminate way to try to deter such use of the pathways.

I'm sure some councils are doing a better job of it than mine.

It's very difficult to stop a push bike or even a small motorcycle while still allowing access for pushchairs, wheelchairs etc. I can think of no simple mechanical solution.

Kissing gates and stiles would limit access to pedestrians but as Robert points out it would limit access to other legitimate users. If laws or byelaws are being broken then enforcing them with some prosecutions may deter. Good luck with getting the police interested though.

gated cattle grids with a sprung side gate for pedestrians that open outwards thus making difficult for motorcyclists without having to get off bike
Narrow tyred bikes can be detered by drainage covers arranged to have gaps oriented in direction of travel but mountain wide tyred bikes are difficult to deter.

There are a minority (small but not inconsiderable) that cause significant damage to tracks on the Isle of Man – destroying thin cover on hillsides leads to drainage channels that erode more of the path during heavy rain
