Hi, I want to lag some of the 3/16 copper pipe coming out of my stand alone boiler, and was wondering what sort of material you guys use. Any ideas please.
We're taking it all too seriously… I think Michael is referring to the (acceptable) apostrophe, whereas Anthony now refers to a comma (which, for me, also works well, as a pause). Michael loves his pedantry, and I enjoy it too.
I was having a brain fart. I was thinking I'd used it incorrectly as a contraction (as in "Keith Appleton is" but obviously it had been used correctly all along. I've no idea why my scant knowledge of grammar decided to desert me completely.
I have used thick bucher's cord (cotton string about .070" in dia. ) wrapped around the pipe, ends held in place with a drop of CA glue, and painted with flat white acrylic paint. Looks quite prototypical. You can see it on my Clarkson's compound mill engine picture.
Before you fit the nut or flange on one end of the pipe, one way to lag is to buy white (sports) shoe laces of appropriate width. Cut off the aglets and pull the lace over the pipe. Bind the ends of the laces onto the pipe with a little brass wire. Always worth drinking a bottle or two of good Rioja just to get the brass wire: – )
The woven fabric looks OK but for more authentic "asbestos" effect, paint the length of shoe lace with a watery mix of Polyfilla.
