Another Telephone / Computer scam?

Has anyone else in UK had a call from 01252675522, purporting to come from "BT Openreach Technical Dept" claiming that that there is a warning of a problem with the router which affects broadband speeds?

The man asked what devices we connected to the internet, and asked for one to be switched on so that he could show the warning.

I told him that I was not near the router so could not see it, and that I could either speak to him, or view the screen of a PC, but not both.

Eventually, he agreed that we were wasting each others time!

The number does not seem to be a BT, or Openreach number, so I suspoect that it was some sort of scam, to acces the computer, or an attempt to sell some device to boost broadband speeds.

Yep, had the same sort of call about a fault with my BT Broadband, and I don't even have BT Broadband.

A little warning.

Like everyone else I get a scamming call on my mobile three or times a week. A few days ago I was very rude, far worse than swearing, to the lady of the phone. My scamming calls have suddenly increased to about six a day and they start in the early morning. They come from a number of different locations.

The mobile phone will be used for texting only (it is the way my doctor's surgery contacts me).

One trick I found that seems to work is, first make sure there is no background noise, then pick up the receiver and stay silent ! If its a real person they will speak, otherwise they or the computer will hang up. That number does seem familiar. Noel

This one was obviously from a call centre, judged by the background noise.

This guy was most voluble, so quite determined to get me on the hook.

Next time, I think that I shall revert to my previous technique.

"Please hold while I go and find Mr / switch on the computer. Then put down phone and go and do something else.

a ) It wastes their time and phone bill

b ) Keeps them off someone else's back for a while.

They seem to have given up telling me that my internet connection will be terminated in 24 hours unless I press 1.

Who would have thought that you could make a career out of being a (Censored ) nuisance to everyone else!

And because I didn't press option 1, a warrant for my arrest has been issued for income tax fraud. Fortunately they don't know what I look like, nor my address so I can send them round to yours.

Sadly, these scammers do take in some unfortunate and gullible folk.

The least that they do is cause some folk a great deal of stress.

I just wish that like the computer whizz in the James Bond Film, we could send a spike, and ruin their computer or phone!

Just be glad that we are smart enough to spot the low life's

The next level scammers all use household brands

BT

HSBC

AMAZON

They all sound very convincing and plausible

I just had a late payment postal demand from Scottish Power because I've been ignoring their phone demands

If it really is important, they will send you a letter in the post

If you want to talk to a company on the phone about money, you get their number from an independent source and you phone them back

Getting fed up with so many iffy calls, we invested in a super-duper call filtering phone last year. It works really well, and allows you to automatically block unwamted calls very easily. Has cut nuisance calls by 99%. You need to spend a bit of time setting it up correctly but its not the proverbial rocket science. Regards
