Because of the injection moulder series in MEW I would like to get hold of some 30% glass filled black nylon 66 granules and some grey ABS granules.

Does anyone know where I can get small quantities of these?

I don't mind buying a bag full if not too expensive but a small amount would last a long while.

A Google search and Ebay have drawn a blank.

      regards David

Call one of the plastics companies who supply material to injection moulders and ask for a small quantity. GE, Borg-Warner (think they are GE anyway these days) or whoever in the UK. Play up that you are editor of MEW and that it relates to an article in the magazine.

Any of the companies I dealt with before I retired would have been happy to oblige …. it's chicken-feed to them.

Sabic Innovative Plastics (formerly GE Plastics) are a major manufacturer of ABS

BASF also makes many grades of ABS

DuPont are a major nylon manufacturer, one engineering grade GF nylon of theirs is Zytel

Hoechst are a second major nylon manufacturer , their generic brand name for nylons is Celanese

Not sure if these firms have distributors in UK but they probably do, they certainly do in Germany and North America.

Just FYI – Accurate temperature control in the barrel and in the mould per manufacturer's resin data sheet / processing instructions is very important for good injection moulding in most resins, but especially for ABS and PC. It is wise to keep this in mind if making a moulding machine for home shop use.

Sabic IP's website has an excellent section on good design practice for injection moulds and moulded parts with lots of general info applicable to home shop moulds or commercially made ones.

One thing I learnt about moulding glass filled nylon 66 is that it must be very/very/very dry otherwise you get brittle fracture of the parts, (I still have the scars) so stick it in the oven on a low temp for 1/2 an hour before you use.

                  Good luck

I used to work in the Polymers side of BP (before it was divested) – most polymer manufacturers have at least one 'small order' distributor for dealing with orders of less than a full truck load. The main sales office of the manufacturer should be able to advise who they use in the UK. – and as stated above you might even get a free sample.

Make sure you ask for an injection moulding grade, even then there may be several to choose from from a particular manufacturer. If you can get to speak to the Technical Support team, they can help with grade choice, and may even be authorised to arrange for samples.

Glass filled grades can be very hard on the processing equipment (rapid wear) – but in a hobby situation that may not be so important.

                        Gentlemen,

Another point not mentioned is that if the granules are over heated they will give off an acid vapour, whilst installing a robot onto an IMM an operator purged the injection barrel of a machine in the same room with a different material than had been used and didnt turn the heat down after a short while the room was cleared because of runny eyes and saw throats. Its a regular job in IMM shops to also clean the building steel work of acid to stop corrosion.
