        Hi All.

Which drill sharpener do you all recommend . The eyes are getting tried.

I was looking at the "Drill Doctor" (but it is expensive)

        Your ideas would be welcome.

        Thanks Doug (Jersey)

I bought the drill doctor and am very impressed with it. Easy to use and does a good job.

Import the wheels from the USA and save a fortune!

A bought a Drill Doctor 750X directly from the US, cheaper, but have to use a 230/110V transformer, the US suppliers only had 110V versions.

I have read about people who have problems using it, but there are nice instructional videos on Youtube. I find it very simple to use – I have perfect drills all the time!

A very good drill grinder is the Vertex (possibly available from other manufacturers also) But not exactly cheap, though,,,

                Vertex

                A good video how to:

                use it

I bought the offering MachineMart sell only to find it ’ crap' ….it relies on the user being able to grind both faces equally…..Maybe that's just my inexperience but to pay that sort of cash I'd expect something better than just a off hand grinder

I don't bother to sharpen drills below about 10mm. As standard I use Dormer A002 four facet drills, which are coated. One can buy an awful lot of small drills for the cost of a decent drill sharpener. I haven't blunted any of my larger drills yet, but they're mainly used for removing metal prior to boring so I'd just grind them freehand as great accuracy is not required.

                    Regards,

                    Andrew

I have a vintage Reliance jig. Looks similar to cheap Asian devices but cast iron instead of light alloy and well made. Used with bench grinder, does a nice job, drills look factory ground and cut like new. I believe these were sold up to the mid 70s, expensive too! They occasionally appear on market tool stools for a pound or two, well worth picking up if you see one. There are three different sizes, the No.1 is OK for our sizes (about the same as the Asian devices), the No.2 is big, the No.3 is huge.

I too thought that the drill doctor 750 was expensive and I could buy a lot of drills for that… BUT then I found I had to wait 3 days because I damaged the size I needed to use before tapping and all the stores were closed- bank holiday etc.

So I swallowed my pride and imported a 750 ! I have not regretted it, apart from when I sharpened a left hand drill that I'd left in the "to sharpen box" embarrassed.

Must get round to making a 4 facet drill sharpener ( D G Brown type) this year.
